I've been needing to do this before I return Fretless his condensor mics that he was letting me try out after my Samson CL8 started acting funny. So here's a clip going through the 4 mics I had at my disposal. I only know the brand off hand. I've put the mics back in boxes and I don't feel like looking in them to see the model you'll have to ask Fretless. :lol:

The order:

-AKG
-"The Canadian" I call it
-Shure
-MXL 990 <--that one is mine

So I recorded this in extremely uncomfortable conditions. Wife and baby in the room... later hour of the evening... no real time to settle in... barely any elbow room when standing. But the clip does the job of letting me hear which mics are decent for how my voice sounds... for better or for worse. To be honest the only one I really don't like is the 3rd. The rest seem workable for me. And I don't mind the MXL at all so for now while I'm doing this thing at home I can feel confident to just dive in with this mic and get some work done.

Aside from issues with the vocal performance let me know which mic YOU liked (or hated least) for my voice and maybe why, if you got a sec. Thanks hommies. Thanks Fretless.

The AKG seemed more defined than the other three, the Canadian was warmer, but lost some top end, the 57 seemed more neutral, and the 990 was warm, but not as detailed as the AKG.. They all sound good, It's a tough one, But I think I liked the AKG best, seems you can do more with it.

I like the Canadian the best and the Shure 2nd but they are so close it's stupid . The Canadian is a Kel HM-2D ,the AKG is a Perception 220 , The Shure is a KSM 27 .

I honestly liked the 57 probably the best. Seemed like it was best in the clarity department.

The 27 is a killer mic , I use it alot on acoustic instruments . it's very lively

Thanks for listening guys. I like the AKG and the Canadian the best. I like what the Canadian mic does for my voice in terms of making it sound a little less nasal and with some EQ in post I'd probably have the best results with that one.

I like the character of the low mids of the Canadian on your voice which is exactly what that mic is known for .I like where it sits in the mix It also has less sibilance which is probably a slight high roll off but works great here on this track with your voice . Still there is a good bit of sibilance on all of them which could be mic placement , puff filter distance eq etc etc . Good test Dude , you sound good .

I do some "singing" on a few songs in the live realm and I have a pretty nasal voice. If you can find a mic that tames that a bit; it helps a ton as far as confidence goes. Next clip needs more La Vida Loca.

On my shitty work headphones, I'd say the Canadian. I may change my mind if I get a chance to fire up the monitors at home.

So apparently the MXL 990 is super easy to mod and there are several mods for it that drastically improve performance...

I may fuck around. Why not? In the meantime I'm looking into considering something else. That Canadian Kel won't be easy to find, they don't make it anymore. But I'm gonna research mics that have similar fullness in the low mids and slight roll off in the highs, or that is known for smooth highs as well.

Never thought my gear interests would switch in emphasis from guitar to vocals... :nerd:

search good on males , avoid the personals and stick to gear forums for "research" . Your mic wasn't bad at all I'm not sure I would do anything at this stage but buy guitars or amps or cabinets :cop:

there are a few very clear rock singers , I like it when they can do it but most of time it's wtf did he say ?

It has a lot to do with my environment. I can't let loose it's literally nearly impossible for me to get in the right mode for singing at home. It's really awful and is something that causes me much strife these days. Anyway, so since I'm lower volume, literally standing against my dresser, no freedom, totally restricted, pulling back instead of opening up... I enunciate too much to make up for it.

It is what it is right now. Also, that's just partly how I sing. Partly. But I hear you.

I'm kinda the opposite - I'm mostly listening to the guitar, and usually don't give a shit what the singer's got to say:)

Mike's doing a great job. I think he definitely has a good voice for this stuff - just needs to (imo) rough it up a bit. Takes cajones to do what he's doing with the family present

Or, he's going to start sounding like the guys in our church band :lol:

Dumb question - you did turn the phantom power off with the 57, right?

Your voice kind of reminds me of the dude from Barenaked Ladies, actually. I dig the enunciation but some vocal dirt would do good as well. I definitely sympathize with your recording situation. It sucks having to force a vibe when you are in an environment where said vibe is next to impossible to achieve.

Hey man; cheer up! You sound good! JerEvil once compared my voice to Clevelands from Family Guy :lol:

You got it much better off! I tried to get everyone to agree on Chickety China the Chinese Chicken song suggestion at practice once but no one would take the bait :cry:

For the record, you achieved the vibe; just having to track vocals while your family stands and stares is probably difficult :phair:
