Gillette (the all things Shaving Thread)

So I need new razors and I go to the drug store this morning. I like Gillette Fusion refills. 4 count is now $21.99. The new 2 count is $13.99. Or I can buy a handle and two blades for $12. Does it cost -$2 to make the handle. Is there a handle production facility somewhere willing to pay to make handles like the B stage bands on Ozzfest. Are handles government subsidized like sugar and corn? Are they using an accounting trick like Enron or America Online, mark-to-market?

I don't know what kind of plastic Gillette is using, but clearly they should move to 24 Carat silver, as it would be cheaper.

Get a double edge safety razor.
I like the German Merkur model 38
blades can be as little as $.10 a piece.
FWIW, Gillette double edge razor blades are really good. Check out the Russian black 7 O'Clock .

Like needing two bolts for a project and they sell them in packages of three. The USA is becoming the most wasteful country in the world OR we always have been
I bought one of these years ago to save on razors. Almost as good as a razor shave. I even shave my head with it.

mamberg'd incoming..........
The two pack WITH handle is what is called a loss leader (even though I am sure they are not taking an actual loss on that sale) - meant for the newbie to get him into the product.
After that - the dedicated used will be 'overjoyed' to see that he can get an additional (4) blades and save at least $2! - or a whopping $7 over the 2-pack (tupac?) price!!
In other words, to paraphrase hcaf - they are trying to
'Expand their market and maximize the profit of their current base'.
side note - how's the leg?

TLDR version: If I had to pick one, it would be Proraso Green Splash.
Others I like:
Speick splash (German)
Nivea Energy splash (German)
Floyd Blue (Italian)
Vito's Acquarelle
Vito's Amber
Vito's Classica
Razorock Baby Blue
Pinaud Club Man
Loccitane Cade Splash (sadly discontinued)
Loccitane Cade Balm
Loccitane Cedre Oranj balm
Loccitane Eau de Beav balm
BTW, I rarely use balms. They make my face break out unless it's sub-zero outside.

I can't use anything but a old school two blade Sensor. Nothing else shaves as close for me. I also use shave soap and then jump into a scalding hot shower immediately.
After the shower, I use Witch Hazel with Aspirins dissolved into it for a aftershave.

Well, I can walk without crutches today, as long as I take baby steps. I have a doctor's appointment in a few hours, and will probably go back to work on Monday or Tuesday. Unfortunately, I had to cancel an interview for a higher paying job. But at least it looks like Imight be back to normal in a week or two, without surgery. Thanks for asking.

I use what works and doesn't cause zits.
Not to mention I shave once, maybe, every 8 days. So, really, I am always rolling with scruff on my face.
Thanks for the free storage in your head!

So, you shave before you shower???
How do you soften your beard?
I shave in the shower with a shower mirror. Changed my life, man.
I like the witch hazel/aspirin idea though. I used to dissolve menthol crystals into my after shaves.
BTW, I have to shave 5 days a week for work.

I'm very perplexed by people who know this much about shaving. I get some razors every few months and its the last thing I would ever think about. I can't even tell you what I have.

I wash my face with the shave soap, hot water and a sponge. You'd be surprised at how well that soap softens things up.

I may try this for the infected hair follicles I get from shaving my head.

Broslinger is giving excellent advice.
Go to westcoastshaving.com and order a Merkur Classic Head double edge razor. I recommend Astra Superior Platinum blades, but Gene's suggestion for Russian made Gillette black 7:00 blades is perfect. About the only thing Russia is good at is is, making double edge razor blades.
Also, get a tub of Cella shave cream and a cheap boar bristle brush. No need to waste money on cans of shave cream.
There is a learning curve - getting the correct angle and pressure is imperative or, you will hack your face to bits.
Save your money for guitars and amps, don't buy multi track razors. They are an evil scam!

I went from expensive blades to s safety razor and have now settled on Dollar shave club. It costs me 6$ for 2 months worth of blades (I don't shave everyday). This is my happy medium.

I have a Merkur 38 but the thing is you have to be a little
more careul. When I'm in a rush I go with a Mach 3 or something similar.
Really, its all about applying cream with a badger hair brush. Really opens up the pores so you can get an easier and closer shave.

Yep, this. I get that there are better options out there but I tried this a few months ago and it works well for me.
