Some questions for Reaper bros.

Rearranged my jam room last night and set up my Zoom interface. Having the Atomic is especially cool as I am trying to get back into recording. My upstairs PC has a "trial" version :cop: of Nuendo on it. I have always dug the interface, transport, etc. in the limited bits that I have used it (and/or Cubase).

Didn't have my installation files on hand so I ended up downloading Reaper. Last time I tried it; it was a mess but that was a while ago. Installed it, configured my interface and I was off. Now for my questions:

1. Is there drag and drop capability with Drumkit from Hell and Reaper? That never worked with Cubase or Nuendo. I want to keep things as smooth as possible as my time for creativity is fairly small.

2. How do you monitor while you track? I armed the track and recorded successfully; but the I could never monitor the audio of my current track.

The interface is different but I am fine with a change. I am just excited I can track things here and there and hopefully get to where I am happy with the results.

You can drag the midi files from the window in Drumkit from hell to the VSTi track that your drum software is on and it should work just fine. I know it does for the Slate stuff. You can monitor what you are recording by right clicking the Arm Record button on a track and selecting Monitor Input, its the option at the top of that list.

The recording monitor switch is right below the mute/solo function, has a little speaker symbol and will turn green when its active.

Not entirely sure what you mean by drag and drop with drumkit from hell though. DFH is an addon for superior drummer, if you load the superior drummer VST onto a track you should be able to drag and drop midi files to that track and get drum sounds.

Hope that helps, cheers

Thanks for the replies guys. I must have just missed the obvious.

As far as drag and drop goes, in Nuendo (and Cubase); you load the VSTI but could not drag loops over to the active project. It was an odd bug that to my knowledge was ever fixed. If Reaper supports drag and drop; that will make my workflow that much easier.

The monitor input thing is not so intuitive with Reaper 5. They removed the button that used to be there, it took me a couple minutes to figure it out too lol and I've been using Reaper for years.

I used to record with one headphone ear on and one off when I tracked my guitars mic'd up until I found the monitor button right there in plain sight

This was a more recent discovery than I'd like to admit.

Seriously, the interface takes some getting used to. Especially coming from Cubase world. Having to figure out the terminology for things and then hoping they are the same from one piece of software to another is always a joy. :phair:

I suffer so much when I have to record on Reaper. All the stuff I do easily on Sonar takes me hours to do it on Reaper. I guess once you're used to a DAW it's hard to switch. I haven't tried Cubase though. Maybe I should...

I'm used to Reaper now and didn't have too much experience before it so I don't feel frustrated.

Been doing a little bit more digging in Reaper. Drag and drop with DKFH works like a charm but I am still struggling. It's not like I am making an album; yet :cop:

I have already done more messing around tracking in a weeks time than I have in 5 years. I am kind of shackling myself to this software because of the drum track workflow convenience; yet I am not sold on these tones/loops anymore. For uber-mechanized metal they will work  :rawk: but more nuanced parts/patterns aren't exactly jumping out at me.

I don't like Reaper selection tools. I should say they aren't very obvious or equivalent to the software i am used to. I also wish the transport was detached/movable like it is in Nuendo. I am getting around ok, but it's still a toss up. :hmm:

Might make more sense to switch my drum vsti and just install the daw software I am used to working with. Whatever I go with; it needs to have good tones, built in metal drum loops and be able to drag and drop that sh*t right into my project. Does Slate drums meet those requirements?
