Sat. night @ home, daydreaming about amp options...

Post by draelyc »

Some of you know I'm still recovering from back surgery. Meanwhile, a nasty A) sinus infection and B) stomach virus has rampaged its way through the whole family ~ me, Mrs. Draelyc and both Babies Draelyc. :freak:  Lots of crying and screaming. Y'all parents out there know the kind of ravening madness such infant/two-year-old crying/screaming can engender. How am I dealing with it? I'm thinkin' about amps, of course!

So I've lately realized that though I love its tone & mojo, my Plexi reissue doesn't have quite enough preamp gain on its own to be completely at home wth my style of "playing" (such as it is). I've been thinking that maybe a more modern Marshall like a DSL would be more my speed (though I'm not sure how much of that ephemeral "mojo" would carry over with the more modern model :idk: ). I love my Trace Elliot Bonneville, but I don't want to sell the Plex and be down to just one amp. I always like to have at least two good amps ~ either for backup in live situations or for variety in recording situations.

Best I can figure in my current, drug-assisted state of daydreaming, here are my options:

1. Sell Plexi & replace it with DSL head.
2. Sell Plexi & replace it with DSL combo.
3. Sell Plexi & replace it with some other "nice" amp (Budda Superdrive, Fender Supersonic 22, other?).
4. Mod Plexi w/ not only master volume but increased preamp gain.
5. Leave everything as is & suck it up / change my playing style.

I'm loving all the DSL clips I've been hearing ~ a lot of great posts in the thread I started about that. And if I go that route and choose the head option, I can eventually pick up a matching 4x12 so Billy won't banninate me from teh forumz. :) If I go the combo route, I'd certainly have an easier time when I get back into gigging the tiny joints around this area, plus I could sell my 2x12 cab for extra cash ... but ... I do already have the B'ville combo for small gigs, and I also kinda like having a bigger head & cab for those rare opportunities for bigger stages (even though I'd be looking at a 50 watt head, so no more powerful than the B'ville combo, technically).

If I mod the Plexi, I'm pretty sure that would hurt the resale, if I ever do decide to let it go, right? Plus, I'm not sure modding it wouldn't "kill" the "mojo" in there, y'know? (I'm talking about having my local tech do it, not spending the big bucks to have Trace or Bray or someone like that do it, though I suppose if I save up long enough that might be another option.)

And if I leave everything as is, I'll have a couple of great amps, but I'll likely remain dissatisfied, because I'm just all screwed up on the inside like that. :freak:

TL;DR version: I'm neurotic & got A) prollems & B) too much time to think about stuff.

Hope y'all are having a pleasant Saturday evening, bruthas!

I hear ya. I've been agonizing over which 2-channel amp to add to my 1-channel 18-watt Marshall clone. I tried out the new 15-watt DSL. It's okay but the clean channel doesn't have enough gain and the ultra channel has way too much for what I play.

Looks like the Traynor Custom Special 50 head is the winrar!! Picking it up Monday.

First thing I'm doing is getting rid of those gross knobs and putting black chickenheads on it.

GOD DAMMIT DRAE!!! How many of these threads are we going to have for Christ's sake? Legit question, right?

There are 2 options...Keep the plexi...Or sell plexi and get any kind of DSL.

As for which one, it's up to you...50 watt of some sort.

Done, problem solved. Now, no more of this madness, please? :D You're like a chick who can't decide which pants to wear with her black shirt

(BTW, hope you and the fam feel better soon...and a speedy back recovery!)

Option 7: Keep the Plexi, and buy the DSL anyway. Srsly, DSL's can still be had for pretty cheap.

Lol, that would be AWESOME! ... But I don't think even at my best I could persuade Mrs. Drae to go for that. And she would definitely notice an extra head ~ our house is pretty small! :o

nightflameauto wrote:I'll just add this, bro. I almost sold the amp I'm using to record with right now and it's, by far, the BEST tone I've ever had. I loved it when I bought it, and the only reason I considered selling was I couldn't get at my gear for a few months while my room was being used for storage. The second I could get to it again I gave up the idea of selling it. Just don't sell something you're gonna wish you had later. That's all I'm saying.

There is much wisdom in this. And one reason I post a lot of threads at times like these is that I know I really have to *think* about it before making a move like that, and it helps to think "out loud" so to speak, y'know?

Fwiw, once I finally made the decision to sell the Dr. Z, even though I LOVED the tone of that amp, I haven't regretted it once since letting it go. Just sayin'.

But obviously, I'm not to that level of certainty about the Plexi yet... :nerd:

Dig. Haven't played the Splawn, so I really would have to hesitate to off the Plexi in favor of one till I did. I have played DSLs in music stores and I know it would work for my style/playing. And it's definitely got that Marshall sound, if not the prestige of the Plexi. :idk:
