Been waiting for the Waves Audio, Vocal Rider plugin to go on sale...

It keeps the volume level of your vocals even without flattening the harmonic dynamics like a compressor and won't bring up extra noise like an expander.
They also make a Bass Rider, but I'm pretty sure you can use the Vocal Rider on guitar leads.
