low pass filter on the cheap?

I have a home stereo passed down to me, and the receiver doesn't have a subwoofer-out.

For now I've been using a Boss GE7 EQ with the headphone out signal to shelve the higher frequencies.
I'd really like to use the pedal in my rig and I'm too cheap to buy a new receiver or sub, since these are working.

Any way to make or buy a cheap low pass filter?

would something simple like this work?

http://www.apicsllc.com/apics/Misc/filter2.html

It's a powered sub, so all I'm low passing is the signal from the headphone jack?

your powered sub doesn't have a pass-through for the satellite speakers?

No, it's a piece of shit. It went with a more advanced receiver, but that died.

I'm using a plain jane technics receiver now.....which was meant to be used with full range floor speakers.
