I'll be honest, I don't think the production does it justice. My very first impression was that it's all mids/low mids, and no bass or highs. Mabye that can be fixed with some additional eq work. I can imagine it sounding much better with the same song/playing. The eq is suffering, though. Steve Albini might approve of the rawness, I just think it's too narrow eq-wise.

Cool, sounds very old megadeth to me other than the outro. Agree about the EQ'ing but it's got it's own vibe going I dug it.

This song kills. "Old Megadeth" is the perfect way to describe everything but the vocals, which are pure late 80s proto-death metal. Really like it.

I agree with everyone about the mix. I actually kind of dig the music, though. Takes me back to when I used to listen to Venom non-stop. Thanks for the time travel trip! :thu:

thanks fellas.

where exactly should i change up the eq? meaning--do the guitars need more treble, the bass less of it, more umph to the kick, etc?

and you know you love my voice.

I wasn't knocking your voice at all! I was just saying it made me think of Possessed, Venom, and Death.

As far as the mix goes, it needs more highs and lows, but it's because each individual instrument needs more highs and lows. You could salvage it with EQ in mixdown and mastering, making it a listenable product, but for it to really kill, you'd probably need to re-record at least the guitars and drums.

i know mang, i was just kidding. i'm really glad you dig the tune.

i have everything to where i can tweak it after the fact without having to rerecord everything, so i can make it work by just dialing in each track individually. it's like a built in re-amp. thank god for garageband!

as for the drums, i only have seperate tracks for the kick and then everything else is all on one track, unforgettably. that's the only draw back i have with that. i can still mess with the eq on them though.

by the way, if you guys don't know this already, this is a one man band thing i've got going on. i'm playing everything and there isn't any programming or any of that nonsense.

The "after" mix is definitely less murky, which is a good thing, but now that clicky kick drum is front and center. Me no likey.

I'm surprised no one's asked this yet...what's the recording setup? The song is awesome, but honestly, it sounds like it was recorded with a really cheap mic with a really limited frequency response. I think the problems aren't with your choice of tone or even mixing techniques, but rather the recording gear.

the only time a mic was used was to do the vocals, and yea it is a cheap mic. everything else was done with my phone and garageband--guitar bass and drums. the drums are electronic so i was able to just plug them straight in to the irig and record them like that.

i know i'm not going to be able to make an amazing sounding recording, but i'd like to get them as good as i can with what i've got.

and holy shit, you should check out some of the stuff i recorded before this one, when i didn't have garageband or an iphone and had do do it all gorilla style.

and thanks brolando.

Good mix of early Megadeth and Death. Sounds great! Vox remind me a lot of Ihsahn/Emperor, not the growling, but the enunciation.

Cool mix of styles

It's cool you're able to pull this off all by yourself without any programmed drums. A lot to be said for that.
