Bass -> irig -> ???? playback and or recording

Sorry up front, but this is a (can I play my bass through my stereo speakers ) question ultimately, but I figured the recording guru's might have some useful info between the "Can I...." and the "No!" that this question always gets. So here goes.
Everybody (even a poor ignorant electrical engineer like me) knows that you can't just jigger yourself up a connector and plug your bass into your stereo and play (for long, anyway) The average hifi amp clipping spikes will destroy the tweeters, and the low frequency extension will thrash the woofer cones toots sweet.
So, here's the question. Does running the bass through an Irig and amplitube software on your phone or pad do anything to change that? The ipad is presumably spec'd to output frequencies that are more compatible with normal hifi gear (so i would think), and the (crappy, noisy, lo fi, I know, I know) Irig may do some frequency filtering and amplitude modulation as well (I'm asking here, as I haven't tried to run it through a frequency analyzer or anything productive like that).
So..... Here's the pitch, it's slow and easy.... Can I let my son practice his nifty new handy dandy bass geetar through my old set of (relatively recently refoamed) Cerwin Vega D5 speakers with my old Marantz receiver if he's running it through an Irig and ipad, or is that still just a quick way to destroy the woofers?
Thanks for any input :-)
And yes, I know, I still need to just buy a bass amp!
