So wifey and I didn't do anything for Valentine's day because of work and whatnot. BUT Friday we went out to about as nice as available (for our area) Steakhouse. It was awesome.

Had me a medium rare 14oz ribeye with some tasty cheese soup and an awesome rice dish. Then wifey and I went to the piano bar area where I had my first scotch, McCallan 12 (very good introductory scotch, I'm going to have to snag a bottle and now I feel ready to start branching out) and we listened to a husband and wife team do some old jazz/blues stuff.

They were great. Both in their late 50s-mid 60s, the wife played piano and sang and the husband played guitar and sang. It was just a ton of fun. He was using a G&L ASAT Special that was gorgeous, blonde ash with black pickguard and white pups....UHHHHHHHH and some sort of old Fender 2x12 amp. I didn't get close enough to see what it was for sure.

Dude could play his ass off bouncing all over the fretboard with various jazz chords and doing little fills and leads. It was great. It was also fun when they would call out "F" or "G" I could see him move his scales around and felt like "Huh, I'm learning at least a little bit about this guitar thing."

It was a kick ass night.

It was my first scotch and I just asked the guy, "What's a single malt to start with for someone who's never drank scotch."

Jim's Steakhouse. Its a local place. Its pretty cool cause its in the basement of a high-rise (relative to our town that is). An older couple was sitting at the piano table too, like in their 80s, telling stories from back in the day. It was pretty cool.

Shaun Livingston, the Cavalier point guard was eating at the table next to me. It was funny cause when he walked in I was thinking "Why do I know that dude?" Then it clicked.

i wonder if they have an online menu.

point im trying to prove is that some restaurants actually serve cheese soup.

of course the soup isnt on the site...

I can vouch that they serve cheese soup! It was delicious! Not broccoli cheese soup. Not rice and cheese soup. Cheese soup. I'm sure it had something else in it, but it was tasty.

It was the soup du jour.

well you know how they have the cans of cambells cheddar flavored soup? i told her once that i liked cheese soup (i do) and shes like "thats just for use in recipes, silly, people dont striahgt eat it!" i said "yeah huh, ive seen cheese soups on menus" and shes like "where, dickface?" and i pout and walk away.

Don't you have being right and KNOWING you are right, but not having any tangible way to prove it handy?

Cheese soup used to be fairly common at restaurants but that was before your time. I like it too and I used to order it whenever I had the chance. Beer cheese soup was probably the most common. Then it got labeled as old school in the late '80 - early '90s and it quickly fell off restaurant menus.

Everything about that sounds good. I love scotch.

YOUNGBLOOD, you do realize you've reached the point where your only victory with the verfcode is cheese soup... ???

Macallan has huge name recognition for single malts and has, over the years, produced some of the best highland malts, but in recent years they've fallen off a bit. I've tried a few of their expressions, the 10,12 15 Fine Oak and the 18. I generally like younger whiskey's but in the case of Macallan I liked the 18 the best. The others, especially the 15 Fine Oak were underwhelming for my taste. There are much better single malts out there that you can get for less in that same flavor profile.

Staying with a highland malt -- Highland Park 12 = fantastic stuff. Then when you're ready to go to the next level try some Talisker 10. Wow,...

After that you can try some Islay malts.

while not my favorite Macallan 12 is a really nice Highland Scotch.... I'm a Glenmorangie fan through and through, I love their "Original" 10 year old, so smooth with just enough of a kick and then all the 12 year old variants are all great... I'm not big on the isle scotches like Talisker, they are just too peaty for me which IMO is too harsh tasting...

"Nice" is a good way to describe Macallan, I'm just not a big fan. Everyone's taste is different though.

Agreed on the Glenmorangie original 10 -- excellent malt. I got a bottle of the Lasanta for Xmas from my mother-in-law. It's good but I like the original 10 better.

Talisker was the first "big peat" malt I tried. I was hook after the first sip, just love it. I've since tried most of the big peat influenced malts like Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, etc. For my taste I generally like those big flavors. If you like Glenmorangie the one Islay malt you might like is Cao Ila 12 (if you've not tried it). It's got some peat going on but it's more subdued and still quite complex. Killer stuff.

I also like me some Speyside malts,...Aberlour being my fav.

Cool... I'll look out for the Cao lla 12, never heard of it before.... I find the Original and the different 12 year olds to be totally different animals so it really depends on my mood. I find the 12 year olds to be a bit heavier and bolder than the 10, so if I'm just going to have 2-3 drinks the 12 year olds are great however if I know I'm in for the long haul with some friends and we will be drinking for an extended period, the 10 year old comes out, I find drinking the 12 year olds for more than 3 drinks is kinda like eating a very rich dessert, it's great for the first few bites but after a while the richness kinda gets to me and I can't have anymore.

Man, now I wish I had some scotch.

Bourbon is gonna have to do.
