do you think i should take it in to go from skinny top/heavy bottom to 10-46 or 11-49?

holy shit, i just looked at my guitar.

it's supposed to come with an earvana plastic nut, i think i have a graphite standard nut.

if you don't have nut files or have never did that type of setup work before it would be a good idea . Going to heavier strings often requires some nut filing and going to lighter may require a nut replacement or some nut work .I would strongly recommend you buy some nut files , a few books on the subject and watch many good you tubes ( I like John Carruthers videos for a quick reference ) learn it and save a ton down the road , also IME you are the best judge of how you like it so in the end you will be able to tweak it until it's perfect for you .

No. Waste of money IMO, all you need to do(if anything really) is adjust the truss rod, which you can do for free.

Damn, that was brutal Nelo He was offering ways to save you money in the long run, and to be honest, I thought it was a helpful post.

Is it the Earvana compensated nut? If so, leave it. They are awesome.

This is what I need to do.

Just restrung my strat this afternoon and you guys would have been cracking up watching me do it. It reminded me that I don't change my strings nearly often enough and that I really need to take the time to learn the stuff you mentioned as I now have new strings and a nearly unplayable guitar.

other way around - its supposed to have the earvana nut, but it doesn't.

Depends on the guitar type but usually If its just a slight gauge difference you can get away without a truss rod adjustment and you don't need a tech for that.

I do if the bridge is a floyd rose. Oh and my Jag I will be getting set up at a workshop simply because it will be a pain (especially if I have to go with a righty trem! The war continues.)
