Compressor en route

I have totally been bitten by the recording bug as of late... I have an ART Pro MPA II on order, just bought a new interface (Steinberg MR816csx), picked up a new [to me] condenser mic, and now I have decided to add an ART Pro VLA II to the mix.

I plan on running the MPA II right into the VLA II then into my interface... This should be great for direct guitar and bass recording, vocals, and acoustic guitar! I am pretty fucking stoked!!!

Badass. I record a cad cgm-2 straight into my interface after my preamps. Gotta commit. Lol

I hope to get to the point that I need something like that.

I hope it is bad ass  I am not familiar with the CAD mic you mentioned...

EDIT: That is not CAD Audio... I am curious about this line processor/noise gate/expander

Need is a real loose term in my case... However, the want was strong with these purchases.

The compressor landed... I haven't got to use it yet, but it looks good in the rack

Once I get the MPA II, I will be able to get this up and running!

Man, I really need to step my studio game up.

So many things to buy....so little money.

The racked equipment does look awesome though.

The CAD CGM-2 compressor = same company as the CAD mic company.

back in the 90's CAD built comps too. They were very high quality. made in ohio.

Isn't that the truth! I have been waiting on my ART Pro MPA II for a month now... The first one I bought got lost in shipping, so I ordered a second in lieu of it showing up... That one was defective [a demo unit], and didn't get sent, but the seller wasn't aware that it did not ship [I guess it is a large company]... They were supposed be getting a shipment of new units Monday and ship me mine; I haven't heard yet and my email hasn't been answered yet regarding the status. It seems fate doesn't want me to own a Pro MPA II

I really want to use this, but with my interface, I don't have individual channel sends that I can run into the unit to setup a loop for inserts within my DAW. So I will just have to wait :bang:

Yeah it would be awesome to be able to shell out on some dope recording equipment. I'm gonna be slumming it with Slate Digital for a while.

Anyway, clips!!!

HNRGD to Cole - just wanted to pass along a link I found via Gearslutz wherein a picky-picky person with lots of time and cash has compiled a huge trove of comparisons and anecdote reviews on compressors, 80% of which I have never heard of.

http://www.ovnilab.com/

I found a few of his reviews were dead-on right, and that's why I'm using a Symetrix 501 in my bass rig.

Thank you sir! I am loving that compressor with my mics! The combination of running this with my tube mic preamp really have been yielding some good tones! That link is going to be useful! Thanks again!!!

I have to track with a comp. I pulled it when I redid my rack. Everything went to shit. Everything sounded lower quality.

I used to never use compression. I thought it lowered the quality. I was misinformed, compression can really help the sound. It can also destroy the sound if one isn't careful. I have been watching videos on mixing and mastering that have been super helpful in understanding things like compression.

I've never used a hardware compressor before. One of these days I'll spring on an 1176. Just to have.

Update?

How's this beast working out for you?

I picked up an ART Digital MPA II but the right channel was F'd up on arrival, so it's going back. Kind of weary on ART stuff now...

Sex,

What are you looking to do with a comp?

Tracking guitars/drums/vocals/synth.
mastering
drum buss
etc?

You might want a DBX 160A for some stuff (bass, Kick, etc.) You might want the Molot Comp plug in for other stuff (further guitar smoothing, cheap mastering). (assuming you're trying to save money.)

I also recommend the CAD CGM-2, because it's awesome. :thu: :D

I really want a pair of Warm 1176's.

I also want to get an FMR RNLA 500 for my Aphex USB 500

I'm actually not in the market for a compressor yet. No real way to use it properly at the moment. Eventually I'll want it for Vocals mostly. My query was mostly seeing how his luck has been with the ART, since I'm leery on their shit now after having received a lemon.

Sorry, I have been super busy with school lately! I will try and get a good follow up response to this later today (after my classes are done)...
