Re: Your favourite Sabbath vocalist
Ozzy. He was the singer on 95% of their best material, and while he wasn't the most amazing technical vocalist, he sounded legitimately haunted and creepy on the early stuff.
Dio comes in second. One of the greatest metal singers ever, but he makes everything he sings sound like Dio.
Everyone else is tied for last. Smooth hard rock vocalists like Glenn Hughes and Tony Martin were just absolutely horrible fits for Sabbath.

Ozzy.
If Ozzy's not singing, then it's not Sabbath, to me.
I DO like the song "The Mob Rules" , but I think that's only BC of the movie "Heavy Metal".

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! Heaven And Hell is one of Sabbath's best albums. Dio re-invigorated that band after the shit sandwiches that are Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die.

Re: Your favourite Sabbath vocalist
Ok, Ozzy sang on the best sabbath stuff, but their later stuff with him is....well, its not better than the Dio stuff.
So, Ozzy, then Dio, but only by a slim margin.
If Dio had sang war pigs, Dio would win by default.

I like both Ozzy and Dio. I think I prefer Dio's solo stuff to Ozzy's though.

Re: Your favourite Sabbath vocalist
my favourite Sabbath album is likely the Eternal Idol. Tony Martin era was pretty cool.
Dio era was obviously great too, Born Again was the craziest album, and Seventh Star had its moments.
The Ozzy era is a bit of a sore spot with me, simply because there is great stuff early on (though I would be happy to never hear anything off the Paranoid album ever again), then it went so incredibly bad towards the end.
Tony must've preferred the Dio style, which is why he kept on going in that direction, rather than reverting to the sludge-y sound of the early stuff.

I just got the deluxe/remastered version of the Eternal Idol including the bonus disc w/Ray Gillen on vocals. I dig the Tony Martin era also. Seriously underrated.

wow i'd really like to hear that. Eternal Idol is a huge fav of mine and i really love Ray Gillen (badlands for those who don't know). Tony wasn't a bad singer and much of his sabbath material is pretty decent.

I wish Ray had been the singer on the "real" version of the album, but that's life.

Re: Your favourite Sabbath vocalist
Ozzy. Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol 4, Sabotage, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. First 6 albums totally kill. Only a handful of bands have their 1st 6 albums become such classics, if the band even lasts for 6 albums.
I also love Dio, Heaven & Hell is one of my favorite Sab slabs. Love both Ray & Ian Gillen. Glen Hughes is amazing, so is Tony Martin, but Ozz, I mean, c'mon, Ozzy was the voice of sab for so long.

Re: Your favourite Sabbath vocalist
Dio would be my favorite, Tony Martin being second. Ian Gillian, while one of my favorite vocalists, was an odd fit for Sabbath. Ray Gillen was awesome on the Eternal Idol demos. Ozzy, while on my some of my favorite stuff, is fucking obnoxious 85% of the time.

Re: Your favourite Sabbath vocalist
Ozzy... Sabotage... probably the one album I played most when Sabbath was at the core of my soul growing up.
Dio era was perfect rejuvenation for a band going south fast - actually, the split that became two Ozzy albums and two Sabbath albums couldn't have been better.
