I like multi effects for strange sounds - "science project" tones. Even something generally regarded as shit, like the Zoom 707 II, can make some cool noises if you're not trying to get a great marshall crunch out of it. Ring mods, crazy oscillations controlled by the pedal, terrible fuzz, washed out reverbs, I like that kind of thing.

I go through phases of not wanting or needing any effects at all other than changes in volume, gain, and EQ, all of which are addressed by having a multi-channel amp.
However, when I do feel the need for effects (as I do in my current musical project), I love multi-FX units. Good sound, small footprint, convenience of one-stomp switching of multiple effects.
I sometimes envy the guys with multi-thousands of dollars worth of individual boutique pedals on big boards, but I think ultimately I'm happiest with what I've got:

I use the Nova System too, and have used others. You get a lot more for the money, to me they sound just as good, and they're easier to maintain. Fewer cables and power supplies to go bad. I don't see going back to individual pedals in the foreseeable future.

I have a GT-6 laying around that is helpful when recording.

I didn't used to; can't stand programming when I want to play. However, the new Zoom units have totally changed my mind. Hook em up to pc and setup is all drag and drop. I still use several dedicated pedals but the G3 and Multistomp really expand my possibilities.

I have a GT8 I plug in every once in a while just to scroll thru and screw around. Live I prefer my pedal board.

I've nearly always had some kind of multi-FX type unit. At the moment I'm using the Axe-FX rig, before that I had at one time a GT-8, POD XT and a Digitech 2112 rack setup, before those I think would have been the V-Amp, and before that the shitty Zoom 505 (right back in my early days of playing). During all that I had some tube amps and put together pedal boards and whatnot, but I've pretty much always had some kind of all-in-one unit to play with.
Shadesofcraig wrote:I never had any problems with the Boss units. For some reason I found it very easy and never even opened the manuals. There is a lot of cool things you can do with it if you dig deep into it.
I had my GT-8 pre-ordered from Japan, so I got it before it was released elsewhere and before there was even an English language manual online. First GT unit I'd owned, but I figured it out no problem. Was a pretty simple and intuitive thing to work with IMO, and even stuff like the assigns were easy to figure out to get all kinds of nifty shit happening. A lot of the amp models I thought were fairly rubbish, but I found a few I liked, and through a tube poweramp and 4x12 it sounded pretty damn nice. And was a piece of piss to lug around compared to my other stuff.

I liked the M9 a lot when I had one, but had to sell it and wound up slowly replacing it with individual pedals again. Tried an old GT-3 for a brief time, too, and liked it as well.

I still have my J-Station because I love the sounds out of it, and I think I'm the only one here in SoCal, at least, that gigged with one.
I miss my G System, that still is the benchmark of quality multieffects for me out there.

I love my Eventides, and sort of consider them to be multi-fx. I also have an M9 and love the simple 1-2-3 pedalboard layout of it. This combo cured me of pretty much all fx gas outside of fuzz and distortion, as it provides all the crazy I could ever need and more. I used to have a Yamaha Magicstomp, which had the best amp and fuzz models of any multi ever, IMO, and some really great compressors and delays. I'm always thinking about getting another one, but also hoping in futility that they'll release some kind of updated model with an expression pedal.

I want to get an M5 at some point. Purely for some of the FM4 sounds without the hassle of owning that one pedal.

+1 on the Eventide stuff; I had a Timefactor for a while and it really was the best delay I've ever used. Ended up getting rid of it though because it was just total overkill for my needs.
I also have a Magicstomp (have had it for YEARS now) and my experience differs.....I think the amp models and most of the drives are terrible, but the delays, verbs, and chorus are some of the best I've ever heard.
That thing is a pain in the ASS to tweak though, so maybe it's user error on my part. Do you have any clips done using the Magicstomp amps?
Currently the only multi-fx I own is the zoom Multistomp, which is quite a cool little box. Wish I'd have known the bluetooth version was coming before I bought it though

No dirt clips, but I remember really liking the Vox and Bassman models, and this one called "battery amp" was perfect just the way it was with no tweaking, really nice lo-fi sound. I also loved the buzzsaw fuzz, which blows away the M9 version of the same effect. I never got into tweaking it either, but I did reload the user bank with a bunch of the extra presets from the CD.

As far as programming multifx presets, you are right its a pain. i have found
FX Tablature (tablature for effects pedals) really helpful. I design a cool effect on the expression pedal, write out the main parameters for the effect, then when I am making presets I can easily add unique expression effects to any preset (setting-by-setting). One cool thing about FX Tablature is you can map the wah/volume/expression pedal's up/down position which makes tabbing out complicated guitar parts with wacky expression effects so much easier and accurate.
My favorite MultiFX Pedal board right now is the
Zoom G9.2tt. It has 2 programmable expression pedals, but the main feature that sets it apart from other multifx is that one expression pedal not only tilts up and down but also has a second axis that swivels side to side! You have to read all the features to see what all it does but pretty much any parameter in the effects chain can be assigned to the expression pedals so the amount of unique effects is limitless.

I love the g9.2tt!! Its amazing unit for not very much $$$ So incredibly versatile, feature packed, and user friendly.
Im also a huge fan of the G2.1nu and the G3X.
The G5 looks equally amazing.
Zoom is really putting out great stuff these days!

yeah, i like that the g9.2tt has midi so even if you did upgrade to a different pedal or processor there is the possibility to use the expression pedals with other effects processors via midi. I checked and the g9.2tt handles 4 parameters per axis on the expression pedals (so it all depends how many parameters a control change message can control on the external effects processor. (whether or not it will exceed the g9.2tt internal effects capabilities or not)
