Hired gunslingers

Ever used a 'hired gun' in your band for a single or short series of gigs ? I mean a FULLY professional walk-on player or vocalist who knows the songs cold and who you've never rehearsed with ?
Would you, in a pinch ? COULD you, is your stuff wired that tight ?
I've seen it done, by a 'beach' band that hired in a bass player who was a musical encyclopedia. The dude was a little uptight at first, but wow could he play. Wrong key ? No sweat. Unexpected full stops, no sweat. They sounded better than usual.
Now I've stumbled across a guy, his rates are very good. It's very tempting. Intimidating as hell, but quite tempting.
