Hired gunslingers

Ever used a 'hired gun' in your band for a single or short series of gigs ? I mean a FULLY professional walk-on player or vocalist who knows the songs cold and who you've never rehearsed with ?

Would you, in a pinch ? COULD you, is your stuff wired that tight ?

I've seen it done, by a 'beach' band that hired in a bass player who was a musical encyclopedia. The dude was a little uptight at first, but wow could he play. Wrong key ? No sweat. Unexpected full stops, no sweat. They sounded better than usual.

Now I've stumbled across a guy, his rates are very good. It's very tempting. Intimidating as hell, but quite tempting.

I've been on both sides of this.

I've filled in for people lots of times, and had to pull some players from the local talent pool to fill in with me. I've never had a bad experience yet.

Also, if my whole band was out of town, and I got a call for a gig, I know within 20 minuets I could have a complete band, that sounded great, ready to go.
