pedal steeler from london seeking tone..

Hi, I play pedal steel through a Fender 75, with a 15" speaker..
It doesn't really sound how I want it. The highs are a bit lacking and if I ramp up the top end in the EQ it sounds horrible, shouty and distorted. and the low end doens't have much definition.
I've heard mixed things about this amp and I'm trying ot work out what the problem is, if it needs different valves or if the stock speaker is crap, or if it can be modded. Or if I should move on..
any advice appreciated...

not many pedal steel guys around here - but we can discuss amps and tubes.
I don't think I'm familiar with that amp - do you have a link, name, or model number besides 75?

although the reviewer and commenters are saying the opposite to what I'm saying about it!

That amp should work pretty well for steel...if its in good working order. Do you have another cab you can plug it in to? I would do that first, if possible, to see how it sounds with a different speaker and cab. If it still sounds crappy, I might start changing some tubes.
Pedal steel wants an amp that's loud and clean. Your amp should do that pretty well.

Hello Henry! Plenty of steel players here in MS! I might suggest you try finding an older Peavy Nashville, or, as others have suggested, a Twin. Possibly an old MM HD 130 would be a nice choice. The one I had was a single 12AX7 pre and a quad of EL 34's. Loaded with a pair of JBL 12's. Pushed lots of air like a twin with a little less break up in the pre. Great amp for steel!!
