Things to know about Tom Gabriel Fischer AKA Warrior:

1) He is a technically limited guitar player. There is not a note the man has ever put to tape that I couldn't play easily.

2) In spite of that, he's 100x the musician I'll ever be.

3) In a genre (thrash/proto-black/early death) that doesn't typically make for rockstars, this guy is/was a fucking god.

4) I don't think, when Guitar World turned the cameras on Tom a few years ago to ask him about his new band/project, they had any idea they were going to get this interview. The guy has some unresolved pain for sure:

Bump for a great post. Talk about using a severely limited skillset to just fucking crush it! Tom definitely has some residual issues. His style of writing is, for me, impossible to duplicate. The riffs would be ones I would throw away for being too caveman yet in the hands of Tom, shit is just heavier than a ton of bricks.

Yeah, I liked how he talked about Iommi and how he felt Iommi's riffs always went a step in a different direction than you expected and how he wanted to do that.

Gonna have to crank some later today.

They were a total-package band for sure. Killer artwork and imagery that looked awesome on vinyl \m/

I was first exposed to them from Dave Grohl's "Probot Album" where he did the song with Tom G. Warrior. At that time in my journey into metal history I wasn't quite ready to fully enjoy them outside of appreciating their place. Now though, I do.

To be honest didn't know who he was but holy shit -- respect -- should be in the dictionary under "triumphing over great adversity".

Warrior has an out of print biography that is impossible to find (but supposed to be amazing). Unless you want to spend the big $$$

Y'know, it's still by far Celtic Frost's worst album, but it isn't that bad. I think the backlash was due in large part to what utter asshats they looked like on the back cover.

That is a mighty nice offer. I have the Mustaine bio which is actually a great read. Any interest in a a temporary trade? I also have Anthony Kiedis book or Lords of Chaos (black metal bio) if you are so inclined. I assume you have the hardcover version of the Frost book? I almost would rather you photocopy it and email it to me due to it's rarity

Mine is the softcover edition, and I honestly am not precious about it. I've loaned it around plenty of times. In fact, I haven't seen it since my last move, so let me scour the bookshelves and make sure I can find it before I get too deep here , but I would love to read the Mustaine bio as well as Lords of Chaos.

The night I got it signed was at the Houston stop of the Monotheist tour, Fall '05. Being Houston, of course all the bouncers were huge-ass black guys, and being 2005, of course they all had Bluetooth earpieces and gold grills. The one patting me down finds the paperback book in the pocket of my hoodie and asks, "Damn son, you expectin' a boring show tonight or somethin'?"

UPDATE: Awesome, I do have it.

I was worried it was in a box of stuff at my mom's house down in Houston.

Also, judging from Tom's signature on the inside cover, apparently it was Winter '06, not Fall '05.

If you were a fan at the time, this period was one of the most "WTF; revered metal artist does 180 degree sellout" moments in heavy metal history. I don't know if I have ever heard the entire album but I do know they are still living that one down to this very day, broke up band and all

Yeah, I remember Warrior doing an interview on MTV right after the release of Cold Lake, and he was wearing an LA Guns t-shirt.

^I just looked up a video from Vanity/Nemesis thinking it was better but there he was, teased hair and LA Guns shirt with cutoff sleeves :lol
