the final countdown--4/10
last movie i watched, not to say i hadnt seen it before. older flick, maybe late 70s early 80s...(edit: 1980) saw it maybe 10-15 times growing up.
aircraft carrier gets time warped to the day before the pearl harbor invasion and has to decide wat do.
time warp effects are on the cheesy side, dialogue can go to the silly side too. but the actual flight footage/communications/shipboard customs are surprisingly accurate. 5000% more so than top gun, which DOESNT involve time travel. go figure.
they could have done so much more with the plot (show modern navy wondering where the fuck their nuke carrier went, etc.) and it implies more in the end than it ever really depicts. could have thrown more historical references in too.

Cap America: Winter Soldier. 7.5-8/10.
It's Marvel, you know the drill by now. But this one had great action and humor, but feels more like a political thriller or espionage flick. I would rate it as maybe the second best Marvel movie behind Avengers, if you like this style of movie.

I thought the first Cpt. America movie was excellent. It didn't really seem to get much fanfare compared to the other Marvel movies but it was great imo.

Caught a couple of flicks over the weekend:
Cpt. America 2: Winter Soldier Boogaloo. Excellent superhero flick. Bonus points for Pulp Fiction reference towards the end

I have to say I dig both of the Cpt. flicks far more than the Iron Man or Thor series, fwiw.
Grudge Match. Expected it to be a -7/10; ended up liking it

I have found if I have ZERO expectations for a flick; I am much more forgiving when I end up liking it. DeNiro and Stallone are actually a solid team and supporting cast is funny enough to carry the rest. Definitely a solid Redbox rental if you are bored.

21 Jump Street - 7.5/10
RSBro once told me Channing Tatum basically plays the same dude in this movie as he played in This Is The End. He's not entirely wrong. Far funner to watch than I thought it was going to be going into it. And extra special bonus points for the baton pass at the end of it. Depp and his old partner played it perfectly.
Who would have EVERY thought I'd end up a fan of Jonah Hill? He's become quite the actual actor. Who saw that coming?

The sequel looks to be very funny as well. Good comedy is harder to come by these days. I watched Anchorman 2 and was seriously wondering where the funny was. Series of in-jokes that I am sure the cast had a great time with but as an audience member; not funny.

Noah 8/10. Taking the film for a film without any bull or strings attached... I thought it was pretty cool. Needed more boob.

I grew up on Disney movies and this one gave me a huge heart boner. Then I got a full on rager when I found out Kristen Bell was the voice of Anna.
This movie is awesome!!

Super hero comic book stuff is not my favorite. This movie was a bunch of that.

The Lone Ranger - Why does Hollywood still exist?/10
My wife INSISTS on watching every remake that comes along. I flat out told her I wanted no part of this one as it looked like a huge steaming turd. And I say that as a Johnny Depp fan. He was the wrong dude to play Tonto on the wrong fucking stage in the wrong fucking way. So I got a big lecture about keeping an open mind and treating it like something new and she rented it anyway.
I tried to be fair and watch it as just a stand-alone action flick. The problem with that is they tried DESPERATELY to toss in every action movie cool cliche they could. Frankly, I'm shocked they didn't have Tonto stride out of the museum at the end of the movie, toss his leg over a motorcycle and ride off with the Hell's Angels or some shit. The Hell on Wheels references were crazy. Hellen Bonham Carter was . . . unecessary is the kindest way I could put it, but I realize there's some sort of contractual obligation to shoehorn her into any movie Depp appears in. There was a whole lot of shit going on that really didn't mean dick to the story, and the buddy-cop-dramedy BS was bland and over-wrought.
NOW. . . after watching it you have to analyze the fact that they DID call it the Lone Ranger to draw in fans of the Lone Ranger. Take a movie that's a steaming turd on its own without tying it to a franchise and . . . yeah, that's not helping any. I just can't get past what a disappointing flick it was. This movie's take on what made Tonto the way he was, and the way they portrayed it. . . bleh. And the Lone Ranger being a bumbling fool that happened to have a horse that was worth a shit was a little off-putting too.
And the end battle scenes could take on the Fast & Furious movies for stupidity and non-reality. And they drug on and on and on.
No sir, I didn't like it. And I tend to like bad movies. This was just bland bad. Not pick on bad. Not "The Room" bad. Not laugh at it bad. Just bad.
We also watched Thor: Dark World. That's pretty kick-ass. I'd give it a 8 or so out of ten. This run of Marvel movies has been great all around really. Even the sub-par ones are better than most shit coming out today.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - HOLY FUCK/10
The first quarter to half of the movie you're left going, "WAT?! WAT?! HUH?!" And by the time it starts winding in the last quarter of the movie you're pretty much just spellbound.
I will just say I've been calling S.H.E.I.L.D. a big bag of dicks since Thor (the first one), so I was happy with the big shake-up plot. Fucking awesome movie. And the post credit scenes were pretty killer too.

OK. Busy week of movies.
Rapture-Palooza - 3/10. Not funny. Just... come on...
Silver Linings Playbook - 8/10. Very sweet for lack of a better term. Great acting and all of that.
The Way Way Back - 7/10. Cute. Kinda boring for the most part. Sam Rockwell saved it.
The Woman - 2/10. Just like every other horror movie on Netflix that they recommend. Bad. Low budget. Ridiculous.
Plus One - 5.5/10. Interesting time travel/doppelganger movie. Wasn't all that great, but i didn't turn it off either, so it gets an extra .5
Insidious Chapter 2 - 1/10. I should have known better, but it was on Netflix and i needed a "fall asleep to movie". The first one is one of the worst horror movies ever made. this one was slightly the same. They always start off ok for the first 20 minutes and then turn into a busted storyline that ruins everything. Bad.

Sam Rockwell can save the biggest pieces of cinematic shit you could find. Just has something about his acting personality that cracks me up. I did like the movie in question.
Insidious 2 I liked. Horror fans are a tough audience. Can't do anything new; can't rehash anything old; just a really tough crowd to please, critically speaking. I think taken as a thriller instead of "horror"; it fares a little better. I would give it a 6.5/10.

Fair enough. Horror in general is lacking IMO. I don't mind a decent remake. Actually looking forward to the Rosemary's Baby mini-series. New is one thing. But make something good that is new. Something suspenseful and creative. Not just cheap scares and silly story lines.
That said... I'm a definitely horror snob. There is a lot of great stuff out there being made. Just not by Hollywood. My general rule is, if it says "From the producers of Insidious and Paranormal Activity", i won't go out of my way to see it... but i still may if it falls on my lap.

I get it completely. I am kind of a reverse horror snob. I keep the bar low so I can just enjoy the movie and take it for what it probably is; low budget acting with huge plot holes

In all seriousness; I will watch anything with a decent budget or with a good buzz on Bloody-Disgusting etc. Foreign horror has been where it's at for me the past 5-10 years. I will agree and say it has been, overall, a very lackluster genre as of late. It is a lot harder to be scared at 42 than it was when I was 10 years old watching something I shouldn't on late night television.
I haven't heard of the Rosemary's Baby mini-series. That will hopefully be good. I enjoy some of the remake stuff actually. The Hills Have Eyes by Aja was awesome and the original TCM reboot in early 2000s with Jessica Beihl was pretty good as well. I am always up for suggestion as there is good stuff to be seen outside of the mainstream.
