Took the boys to see The Black Phone. Killer semi-slow burn into yelling at the screen flick.
Great time period vibe, excellent creeper performance by Hawke as well as all the child actors. The mask in the previews had me more than a little skeptical but the movie was great. Directed by same guy who did Sinister with Hawke a few + years ago. He used bits and pieces of that gritty dream sequence film vibe in it to great effect here. I have read a novel or three from Hill but not this one? I think it was a short story iirc. This story had a King writes a (way less fantastical) overdone version of the Lovely Bones or something? Really good, dark popcorn flick.

My daughter asked me to do a Hobbit and Lord of the Rings marathon this summer with her. We're down to the Return of the King, but since she lied about saying the F word yesterday, she's gonna have to wait till next week to see it.

Grandkids were over this weekend. We ended up watching the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers thing on Disney+. Done by the Lonely Island guys, basically. I had heard it was really good and it actually was. Very Roger Rabbit for 2022. Excellent cast and actually really funny as an adult. Give it a go if you get a chance.

watched a few things recently.
Everything Everywhere All at Once: 9.7/10. It has everything i want in a movie
The Unbearable Weight of Massive talent: 6/10. Started off strong and hilarious. It got a bit meh towards the end though.
Crimes of the Future: 8/10. Loved how odd the story was. That chair is hilarious.

Talent drags a bit towards the end. Still need to see the other two.

Seven Psychopaths - still holds up. Probably a 9/10
That whole Walken scene where they tell him to put his hands in the air.
"No."
"Why not?"
"I don't want to."
Kills me every time.

Apocalypse day:
Don't Look Up - Funnier the second time around. 7/10
This is the End - 8/10
Rapturepalooza - 8/10
The World's End - 8/10
Though, honestly, we love all of them in their own way. Good fun all the way around. I love how The World's End is basically an alien force saying, "We can make you better," and the movie ends with them just being belligerent assholes and saying "fuck off" over and over again. LOL. So us.

The Black Phone: It's a Blumhouse movie, so i came in weary, but it was being applauded a lot on my facebook, so i gave it a shot.
There is nothing redeeming about this movie. I take that back. the main kid acted decently for what he had to work with. The script was written OK for what it was (I've seen way worse), but the story itself was an awful mess. If it wasn't wor the kid, it would be a 0/10 (Joining the ranks of Open Water, Insidious and The Conjuring)

This is Gwar: One of my favorite bands (I don't mean that ironically. Scumdogs of the Universe and America Must Be Destroyed are literally two of my favorite records). GWAR has literally had maybe 100 actual active "members" in it (including "slaves" and such), so it's not easy to show it all, but it was a fantastic doc. I even got teary-eyed in one spot. Highly recommended

Tennet - "go fuck yourself away, man. Seriously." / 10
We couldn't get through it. And for those saying we didn't give it a chance, we turned it off with 23 minutes left in the run-time. Zero characters to care about, the plot was paper thin, if that, and the time fuckery wasn't even well thought out. I mean, if your main pull is fucking with the timeline, at the very least you need to stay self-consistent. They couldn't even pull that off.
Gray Man - 4-5 / 10
A passable popcorn flick. Fun to watch Chris Evans play the morally bankrupt type for a change. He should have roles like this more often. Literally the best part of the film. The rest is a literaly Hollywood checklist of shitty action movie tropes. Little girl with a disease? Check. Reluctant badass hero buddy? Check. Dad's a lost soul? Check. Nobody developed beyond "personality trope needed?" Check.
I'd kill for a movie with characters that feel like they matter to anybody. Maybe even to themselves? While Gray Man plays with the premise to the point of even having the checkbox filling bad-dude in charge SAY they don't matter, he was so bland as a character that his words felt even more meaningless than the characters themselves.
If I had the opportunity, I'd love to have the director and writers in front of me so I could shake my head at them and say, "You can do better. Your mother and I are so disappointed."

Agreed. Christopher Nolan hasn't done anything good since The Dark Knight Rises. Inception and Interstellar were steaming turds too. Don't go telling me that these movies are complex, intelligent, deep, etc. They are convoluted messes.
While I didn't find Interstellar as insulting as I did Tennet, Inception was a bit

I dug Inception quite a bit. Tennet had moments but trying too hard is always going to be trying too hard. This phenomenon is made 1000x worse when the genre is sci-fi tinged. Ugh. Interstellar was good because of the cast but I never feel the need to revisit.

I don't think anybody in their right mind would argue it's not dumb. Dumb isn't necessarily the antithesis of fun.
Then again, I'll watch The Room multiple times in a row just for a laugh, so, ya know, I ain't above slumming it with my film viewing.
