One thing that sticks out as absolutely criminal is lumping those two bands into the same category.

If you're talking about the 'pop hits' stuff REO Speedwagon put out, I can certainly understand that. Hell, it practically broke up the band.
But do you also mean you didn't like the live album, "You Get What You Play For ?" Because that is full of really good material.

I will admit that I hated REO unilaterally for the longest time, until I heard some obscure prog-sounding track late one night on the local rock station ... didn't recognize it until some vocals came in & I was all like, "That sounded like REO Speedwagon, but it *couldn't* have been, because it wasn't licking donkey scrota :idk: " ... So perhaps there's something to what you're saying there. :)

You like Styx, nakka :cop:

And I agree about REO Speedwagon. I lump them in with Styx because they both suck dookie.

there's access to any and everything you could ever want to listen to just a YT search away. "no good new music" = from the r3tard strongs.
hell lots of older bands are putting out some of their best music currently. Rob Zombie's newest one is his best work since AstroCreep IMO. i've had in on constantly for weeks.

I've been listening to White Lung a lot lately. It's like a post noise rock punk something or other fronted by a female. I like 'em.

I really like the new Queens of The Stone Age too.

But to be honest, in the last few years I can't think of a single new straight up rock 'n roll band that has come out that wasn't douched up frat boy Tremonti looking motherfuckers and that has also blown me away.

It's as if we're being invaded by local Nickelbacks everywhere. It's a lot like what happened to the hair metal guys after grunge hit. They sort of tried to adapt and failed miserably. That's where all the Nu-Metal guys are at now.

And Dave you're in DFW so I know you know what I'm talking about. ;)

And vocals have become atrocious. No one sings anymore. They just adapt Hetfield yarls and metal grunting because they can't fucking sing. I want some melody gat damn it. And I ain't talking David Coverdale or some horse shit like that. I mean real, gritty, soulful shit. Where has it gone?!?

That said I love me some Kvelertak.

Badass band. Excellent blend of punk vibe and metal aggression.

Big Wreck is one of the bands who, while not obscure by any stretch, does "rock" how I feel it should be done. They do have the post-grunge thing going but they do it tastefully and with some serious musical chops. IMO at least. Of course, they have been around since the earlyish 90s iirc, so they don't necessarily count as "new"
