Re: Not debatable - BOSS pedals suck
I'll jump in on both sides. You are all right..... kinda
I can hear every one of them bypassed easily vs plugging straight in.
I honestly don't think it is hard to hear. But every single pedal I have or had
makes things sound different, true bypass or not... easy to hear, even in blind test
I done with friends
SD1 I will only put in my chain if it's on, it's a great pedal when engaged. I don't think it sucks necessarily in bypass, but it's definitely different and not "quite" what I want to hear.
My vintage OC1 I can definitely hear bypassed, but it makes things a little clearer
and better than not being in the chain. I honestly have to have it there. Maybe it's buffer
was different in the Japanese ones??
I have a couple vintage NS-2, also from 88 (they do sound different than the new ones too)
I can hear them, on or off they effect tone...
but I like them and I've used them forever, even with a Kemper... I need it there, so I guess I like sucky tone
Wahs annoy the hell of me though, I have never found one that the bypass sounded good
and every single one I want to set on fire and bury it,
My beloved Maxon AF9 is really bad bypassed.
But like the SD1, I only plug it in when it'll be on.
I have tried a bunch of different buffers, and loop/bypass pedals... Those change the tone too.
Hell, I have an X Blender I just got a week ago that I had hopes for... Nope, true bypass or
not... The OC1 bypass buffer sounds better that it's bypass!
So at the end of the day... Whatever- HAHAHA
(Ducks incoming rocks an people pointing and laughing)

Re: Not debatable - BOSS pedals suck
Well that's exactly the point. Everything changes the tone, pickups, pots, cables, pedals, tubes, speakers etc..
I have a tuner, wah, chorus, overdrive in front of the amp, delay reverb in the loop etc and at the end of the day the rig sounds great. Because you build your tone and EQ as you build your chain... the end result is the ONLY thing that matters
There are some devices out there that flat out kill your tone, limit dynamics etc but Boss pedals are not that at all.
A bit of frequency roll off or boost here and there is not sucking tone. If you switch your speakers or tubes to some darker sounding ones, are they sucking your tone? Of course not, it's just a different color. Besides, you have knobs on your amp, use them.
These pedals have been used on some of the most iconic tones of all time ranging from Gilmour to Moore to Van Halen, Satch, Nuno, Zakk all the way to guys like Eric Johnson etc..., if your tone is sucking the problem is not the pedals...

Re: Not debatable - BOSS pedals suck
To me it always sounded better to use e.g. the buffer of the TU-2 or any other BOSS pedal as the input stage of the board instead of running through several true bypass pedals. I honestly do not see the issue

Re: Not debatable - BOSS pedals suck
I have a Polytune 3 with the Bona Fide buffer built into it first in line in front of the amp. Then I go to a Drop, Koko boost, SD-1, and then a CE-5 last. I don't notice any tone suck but that could be because the Polytune takes care of that.

yup.... the TC buffers are good so that will sort you right out....
I have two always on buffers, the one in my Peterson Strobostomp Mini and then from the output of the Voodoo labs switcher.... after that it's all A/D and D/A converters because of the HX Effects... I can say that my rig with a 10 foot cable and my rig with the pedalboard hooked up in 4CM sounds and feels the same....

I've noticed that people get that picky about stuff like true bypass when they can't play out much due to life events like priesthood or a volleyball team's worth of children.

My actual personality has wayyyy more to do with why I don’t play out than my kids do.
But all deafness and cope & seethe aside, it’s really not debatable.
Suck it BOSS boys!

I’m ok with the attacks because they don’t make BOSS suck tone any less.

The only thing that could make me play guitar even less at this point is there being a BOSS pedal in the signal chain.
