My favourite is a JB, but I installed it in 5 different LPs before the magic happened.

Yeah, JBs are quirky. I have one in my Les Paul Studio now and it's awesome but this very same pickup went into all my other LPs and it sounded bad in all of them except this one. It's the hot chick of guitar pickups. Very temperamental!!

There it is. He found the truth and it’s a great PAF style Sheptone.

Was able to play for all of 5 minutes after getting everything up and running, and the sound was glorious.

Got back late and played around with it for a bit. Unfortunately, 2204 half stack doesn't like to be at nighttime levels in the garage, so not a great 2nd trial run, but the sound I was hearing was exactly what I was hoping for, and none of the excessive noise and other problems I was getting with the BKP HB-sized P90 set I'd been running with (apparently) shite pots.

The new set of Bourns pots with the Russian PIO caps and swapped pickups are FANTASTIC.

No time for clips yet (hopefully tomorrow), but here's some pics of the journey thus far.

Out with the old (although I love those worn-down nickel covers )...

Image

In with the new (original 36th Anniversary DiMarzio that I got from Bill in the neck, Sheptone TB from Mike's / my son's Worship Strat in the bridge). Mismatched af, but right now it's all about the toan...

That's awesome man. A bit of a mismatch is actually great. I want my neck pickup to be cleaner.

I like the look of the BKPs though. I'd consider putting some aged covers on the HB.

I remember how much I liked that 36th Anniversary neck pickup, and it shined as soon as I got everything hooked up yesterday.

Totally agree about the nickel. Gonna have to look into that (and am certainly open to suggestions :thu:)

I honestly like the mismatched look on thst guitar. It just works. Don’t get me wrong, covers could be cool, but that just looks like a RAWK machine.

Oh, it’s definitely growing on me… we’ll see. For now, I gotta get rid of some of this rust in my fingers and just play the damn thing - ‘cause it sounds WAY better than my playing ability, especially through that new 2204 :rawk:

Seymour Duncan JB, they've got great cutting mids to them but are pretty well balanced, and they clean up nicely when you roll the volume back. They're a classic for a reason.

yeah but they don't work on this guitar (I tried it myself, this guitar used to be mine). I have another LP here with a JB that sounds great. Go figure. :idk:
JBs are finnicky. Great on some guitars but not on others.
