would a poor ground only be apparent at louder volumes?

I was playing around with my SG/jvm on lunch. Lower volumes typical single coil hum I can deal with, slowly bring the master up higher and then the unpleasant microphonic feedback kicks in once you hit a "proper tube amp volume"

Yeah you’d hear a bad ground at lower volume.

How close to the amp are you standing?

I obviously had to be near the amp to turn it up in this test, but even walking across the room maybe 10 feet and facing away from the amp the feedback was still going

Didn't know you could pot your own pickups!!! Amazing!
I may have to do that on my LP Jr... every summer, I play a show in a park and the P90 picks up a nearby radio station.

First off and this is from my old amp Tech in NY, Mesa Boogies, not exactly sure which ones but I believe it was mostly recto based models have a inherent design flaw and the 60 cycle hum from Bar Lights and some florescent lights will cause them to be noisy. The guitar isn't helping I am sure.


As for potting just go to a craft store and buy a chunk of paraffin wax and I use a coffee can to heat it up in on my stove. Then just dunk away. Worked perfect on the last one I did. Then just wait till the can cools put the plastic lid on and save for another day.

i can attest to this with my mark iib. in SOME... not all.. scenarios--- p90s can be a fricken bear. recording last, the studio i was in had 'the death spot' and i was picking up hellacious shitttastic noise like i've never experienced in my life. that guitar and amp? never heard it before EVER. I just had to face EXACTLY the right direction. super annoying- but i'd prepped the entire record on a p90 guitar and wasn't about to abort, so i just put up with it. got home? zero problems.

i genuinely think loads of the suggestions are good-- ground check, potting (mine weren't potted either), and possibly, if you have a polarity switch on the amp to give that a go. i did all of it minus the potting... and think it was largely EMR just gunking it up. worst part was-- amp was in another ROOM- so it wasn't off the amp- it was straightway just an electrical chase or transformer or maybe a radio tower (!?) somewhere nearby.. not an amp in sight in a bigass gowanus warehouse space!
