Exactly that. Either bring a tube amp or GTFO. Your good tone shouldn’t have to suffer because of his castrated amp.

Ditch that player or make him play your mojave next time

That's actually a pretty good description of how the Katana sounds to me.

tbh I like a hard hitting drummer :o it usually means i can crank my shit up high :D but not that day i guess. :( my concern was that he would not be able to hear us with our amps so low. We got by, but makes me wonder how well he was able to hear the amps. he had ear plugs in too.

he complained about the mojave being too loud as well. Even on 1 that amp has quite a bit of volume. This is the second guy ive played with that had a katana. I don't like those amps, and the other guy with a katana insisted on actually turning up louder than me because he would say he could not hear himself even though i could hear him just fine. idk lol. i do play with some volume, but its not like i have my amps cranked to 10 or anything like that. :nlisten: 3 on the laney was sufficient, it could have been a bit louder because the drummer, but :sigh:

lol

Honestly I don't jam with people often, so perhaps I am just not aware of the "etiquette" when it comes to jamming and volume. It also doesn't help that my jam room isn't exactly large, so I get that a lot of volume can be a bit overwhelming. But I am using a 2x12 and its not like anyone is sitting directly in front of it or anything.

50 watt katana to a practice with other musicians? Hahaha! F off with that noise. Tell him to get a real amp to play with other musicians and leave the katana at home for his solo practice time.

I brought it down to 1 and it sounded like crap, because a rangemaster with a clean amp just does not sound great. He even said it sounded bad, but I had no choice but to deal with it. I wanted it louder, because the drummer hits hard. But I had to play at the damn thing where it just did not sound that great. ugh lol oh well

That's bullshit. I'd have said I don't have a master volume soit sounds like you will have to get a real amp.
Taming that amp to keep up with the Katana is racing to the bottom, especially the 50w combo, which is not even made to be played outside the bedroom.
The 100w Katana combo or the head can hang but the 50w is a home practice amp.

I have loved the looks of these ever since I first saw them. Obviously time to fire the other guitar player.

I'm not even sure what other amps he happens to have. :o I'll have to find out.

I think perhaps his biggest complaint was the volume. But next jam session I am setting up another area to jam in, much more breathing room for the amp so maybe it won't be too bad. I guess we will see.

Seriously thinking of getting the 100 watter now. Which has a master, so that might make people happy lol

Hahaha... A 100 watt Laney, even with a master volume, will be stupid loud at the levels that will make it sound its best. That said, I imagine the 100 watt version would be spectacular!

lol true. It will be a while before I get the 100 watt version, the 30 is pretty sweet already. Plus I do need to recoup some funds.

So after spending some quality time with this amp, I have a few things to say. A boost as absolutely necessary with this amp. I think a treble booster is made for this thing. On its own, its very "wooly" and bassy. The distortion is very grainy with kind of a loose low end. It has its own sound, does not sound anything like a Marshall. Once you hit it with a rangemaster its such a good sound.

I find this amp to not be super loud honestly. After 3 on the dial you get a bit more volume, but not much more. It distorts more all the way up to 10, but still has that wooly grainy bassy characteristic. It almost sounds like a low gain fuzz pedal

I'd like to upload a clip; I've tried getting a decent clip on my phone and its not satisfactory to me. So I may just mic up the amp and record that way. But I'd lkike to showcase the amp without a treble booster first, then with. There is a yuge difference.

Ok I made a clip, it sucks, the mic is clipping a bit, but oh well. you get the idea. first part of the riff is no treble booster, then treble booster is engaged, same riff. Kotzen tele>Treble booster>Strymon deco tape saturation on>reverb>Laney

I know I suck at recording, in fact i was scared to even share :o

Damn, even with the clipping I dig the contrast. Boosted is badass!

yay! yeah sorry for teh clipping :o I rarely ever use my recording stuff and I never got it down tbh. It's a great sounding amp, I do intend on getting the 100w version at some point, but priorities. this amp will do just fine for the time being.
