When I moved to the D.C. area, the wife started us on a paleo diet. For the first month you don't eat any processed foods or sugars. That's really hard, as there's hidden sugar in so much food. After the first month we started to cheat with about 4 meals a week (once a week I eat a whole pizza too). Your body no longer processes sugar before fat, and you start to burn fat off immediately. We both lost a lot of weight by doing nothing but that. My wife lost about 50 pounds, I lost over 30. It's so easy, and you can find some incredible recipes that are paleo compliant, including kick-ass Chinese recipes.

The average night I drink 2-4 beers, and they don't really put any weight on at all. I realized that beer by itself doesn't make you fat at all, it's all the other shit you eat that makes beer adds to. The wife and I love to drink it, and on the weekends...look out! We also drink a lot of German beers, and they don't put any shit in them...love the Purity Law!

Sugar however...that shit is the devil. It's absolutely terrible. When you eat healthier, you realize how shit food makes you tired and depressed. It's in everything, and it's killing us.

yep. Beer is fine. I drink mostly on weekends but I can down a 12-pack on a single night easily. It doesn't affect my weight at all. If anything my weight goes down when I drink beer because it's a diuretic and eliminates water weight. As long as you're not snacking along with the beer, it's totally fine. But I do try to be extra careful on my drinking days and eat lighter meals on those days just to leave a calorie gap for the beer

I've found as long as I don't succumb to the drunken munchies, beer has no real effect on my weight... well as long as I'm not downing a 12 pack everyday. I think it being a diuretic, I tend to wash away a lot of the nutrients in beer before my body can fully absorb it :idk: I do the same thing when I plan to drink heavily, though. I lighten up on the food to make up for the extra calories in beer and whiskey

No shit, right? Brother from another mother. You from the East Coast by chance lol?

And I love beer. So does my wife. Yesterday she called me a pussy for only having 2 beers when she was on her third.

Back to the snacking at night, one of the biggest things that really helped me lose weight before the diet change was stopping late night eating. I'm honest about it...I love smoking weed. Pretty much every night, and occasionally during the day. I used to come home and eat 2 sandwiches (Arby's Beef & Cheddars 5 for 5, 3 before band practice 2 for when I get home), or a box of cookies, or some shit like that. My old band had a steady Wednesday gig, and a fan used to bring us food from the pizza place she worked at every time. After every one of those gigs at 3 am I ate a cheesesteak with extra cheese. Plus pizza between sets at the gig. It took a lot of discipline to stop eating late.

It's funny, I rarely get the munchies now, and eat fruit if I actually succumb to them.

Dang man, that seems like a lot of food. I don't eat a ton but I don't eat healthy and I love sugar. I have to figure out something to replace the sugar. I drink maybe 2 good beers a night. Sometimes none. Weekends about the same or maybe more.

I was 307 sep/October. Down to about 245/248. Was down to 242 a little over a month ago, and had to get on a 4 week cycle of prednisone. Plan to get to 200. I was 183 when I met my wife 19 years ago .

I can put food away like no ones business. In the past I've eaten...

2 medium pizzas, 2 toppings each and a six pack of coke from dominos. Used to do that all the time. I'd have two cans of coke left.

All five from Arby's in one sitting. Many times.

Eight Reese's eggs in one sitting.

Two foot long hoagies. No problem.

Two double cheeseburgers, a strawberry shake, and apiece of pie from Burger King all the time.

I love eating. If it was cool to be fat, I'd let myself go. But I'm shallow.

That's crazy!

I would weigh a shit ton more if I had an office/sit down job. I walk 6-10K steps a day on average and that probably helps a tiny bit.

ya', I've become so sedentary the passed 5yrs or so. working at home has NOT helped me at all.
I'm much better off getting off my ass and out the door if for no other reason than to walk around the block.

Having the dogs has helped in that regard.

PrimeH you look great! Keep up the good work man. No small feat to get where you are. You much feel SO much better on every level. :thu:

This is a good idea...thanks Grime!

What’s your background? I was usually in ok shape, but the last 6-7 years or so I've been working from home, and its taken a toll. I'm 43, and before the last couple months I was sucking up sugar like no tomorrow and taking naps in the afternoon. This is kind of frightening to me as my mother is a type 2 diabetic, and odds are that I'll get it too...my kid brother is 6'2 and weighs around 175-180, so he's not gonna get it lol.

Recently, I've undertaken a master cleanse, and it pretty much killed any desire to eat sugar, so that's helping.

What causes you to be overweight? Work and fuckin laziness...I basically sit in a chair for 8-10 hours a day. I try to take breaks and stretch, but I own my business and if I'm not working I don't get paid...the more I work, the more $ I make, so it's hard to stop and do nothing.

How long have you been trying to lose weight? Just the last 3 months or so. Xmas is always a trying time, our families cook like motherfuckers and there's food around 24/7 from Thanksgiving thru to NY's.

How much have you lost, and/or how much do you have to lose? I've lost around 30 lbs, give or take. I'm 5'10 and I'd like to be back down to around 175, solid. At my worst I was like 225/230...that is some seriously unhealthy weight for me with my build.

What are you doing about it? Eating much healthier....Shakeology for breakfast, some almonds for a snack, I walk in the early afternoons for a few miles and then down some protein shake, and then eat MUCH smaller portions of chicken, brown rice/quinoa and a shit ton of mixed veggies.

What foods/exercise are working for you? See above.

How the fuck do you maintain after losing it? Just no backsliding...I've always suffered from serious heartburn, and I've come to realize the last couple months it's from nothing more than overeating...my best friend is a fuckin monster and eats like you wouldn't believe....I basically picked up his habits, never mind the fact that he's 6'4/250 and needs all that food, I just got used to eating like he did when we lived together years ago.

I've learned to listen to when I'm hungry, and only eat what I need to take the edge off, really. I'm kind of shocked at how MUCH I was eating...like said above, it was nothing for me to kill a whole pizza or a bunch of steak and mashed potatoes.

I realize this is going to take some time, and I'm ok with it. I'm building up with the walking, I'm doing like 5/6 miles a day anymore. After I get down to the goal weight I'll start hitting P90X again...I did it years ago and it's fully amazing the results you can get, I just slipped on it and it got to be a hassle. I'm budgeting my time more efficiently, so I have more time to work out.

I'm not skipping shit I love entirely...I'm a burger-holic and I fuckin LOVE pizza, but I get smaller burgers once a week or so and just have a slice of the 'za when we go out. I'm starting to realize that they both make me feel like shit for several hours afterwards, so they'll eventually be phased out. I've gotten some recipes for chicken and rice and stuff, its easy to just throw it in the crockpot and then stack up some pre-portioned servings for dinner for like 4-5 days, and it feels much better than going out to eat.

Realizing that this isn't a 'temporary change', that it's going to have to be just my lifestyle from now on helps. They say it takes 21 days to make something a habit, and I've been on this for way longer than that. It's not even a thing anymore, really...just what goes on. I figure if I can maintain that thought process then this should be much easier than it has in the past.

Feeling much better as a whole lately too.

I'm gonna keep posting in this thread just to help track progress.

Good luck you guys, keep it up! :hi5:

The Good news: playing drums has increased my testosterone and strength. Plus, I found a probiotic that makes me feel bloated and full all the time. I'm noticeably less hungry and dropped three lbs effortlessly. I can see it in my face.

Buy a bob stroller and toss your kid in it and go for walks. That's what I did before I was able to get Brodie on a bike. That is if your knee will handle it. Riding bikes is great too if you can do it.

That's how I've always dropped weight. Clean my diet up, ride my road bike.

I guess you could say my plan is...

1) Buy a good blender. I love my Blendtec...

2) learn to make healthy smoothies. I put a quarter cup of real greek yogurt in, a quarter cup of Flaxseed, cinamon, fill the rest up with spinach and about 2/3 cup of frozen fruit and blend. You can add a touch of honey to taste.

3) forget about eating late at night.

4) forget about carbs.

5) whatever you're currently eating for portions cut it by a third, then in half once you've gotten used to eating less.

In general Americans eat too much. If you travel abroad you feel like you're starving at first because when you go out you get "normal" portions instead of the 5000K-Cal offerings you'll get at the typical Applebees. We also eat way too much fried or and processed carbs. You don't have to give up eating this stuff but you do need to cut back.

At one point I was as heavy as like 235lbs. After getting divorced and getting a handle on my own life I got back down where I should be at about 190. I alternate between 180 and 200 depending on whether it's winter or not. I need to work harder at staying in shape when the weather is shit. My big problem is the wonderful Mexican food we have here.

For me 170 is way too skinny.

Foods that work for me when I want to loose weight.

Breakfast - Oatmeal with scoop of protien powder, cinnamon, and raisins mixed in.

Mid morning snack - apple

Lunch - Chicken breast or fish with either vegetables or can of reduced sodium pinto beans with onion and cilantro.

Afternoon snack - apple

Dinner - just a serving meat, no carbs. Could be steak, chicken, fish. Or a protein powder shake.

If I work out it is after dinner and I will have another protein shake. This shake is skipped if there is no workout.

Usually take multi vitamin with breakfast and dinner.

I gain weight easy so I need to be extreme like this with my diet. Been doing this the last 12 weeks and lost 35 lb.

Thanks for the motivation fellas. I need to get back on this train and keep it going. Guess I"ll give running a try and go from there.

I am at the point I need to lose some weight.
I am walking every day to the station (mostly up hill).

But I moved recently and have been drinking more as its been quite stressful, plus working 7 days a week means I have been eating junk at the weekends to keep me going.
Time for a lifestyle change.

Man! Good on ya!

I just started a 6 week "Boot Camp" program. Have to go a minimum of 4 days a week. Shooting for 5. Did second day today. What was REALLY fun is having to go shirtless for before and after pics. Had all our fat butts lined up like cattle! LOL! If the results are good maybe I'll post mine in 5.5 more weeks.

What sucks is I lost most of my weight through stress and extreme dieting with cardio thrown in. I got some loose skin that's never going to recover from being heavy for so long so that needs to get cut off. Especially my lower gut and weenis area.
