Re: Gillette
FWIW, I've settled on a cheap Omega/Proraso Boar brush.
It's a good medium of stiff and soft, plus it was $16.
I had a really expensive badger brush that would lose a few hairs every time I used it, plus it wasn't stiff enough to make the kind of lather I prefer.
BTW, I'm evenly split on soap vs cream. Shit, I use brushless cream 80% of the time. Kiss my face and creamo are equally good.
just buy everything Proraso makes, and enjoy top of the line stuff for under $10 a pop. I've used REALLY expensive stuff, and it usually burns my face or doesn't work as well. Art of Shaving = overrated.

I only shave once a week, so it isn't as big a deal for me. However, I have found that Cremo shave cream has saved me quite a bit of money. Since a little goes such a long way, and because of my routine, I still haven't finished with my first tube, which cost $10.
Now, as for the razors, it's a well-documented business model going on here - give the handles away, and rape you on the blade prices. I'm still using the same Mach 3 Turbo handle Gillette sent me when I was 16, and if it breaks, I'll probably go safety razor. I'll get a good handle, a 100 pack of blades, a strop and AlO2.

Re: Gillette
I shave immediately getting out of the shower. I cut less because my pores are more open from the hot water, skin expanded, and I get passes without cuts. I don't have full thickness facial hair but it grows in funky on my neck and will cut every single time if I don't shave coming out of the shower. I use Costco pack gillette razors, I think they're dual blade but they might be triple I can't remember. They're pretty decent for disposables and they don't cut up my junk either cause I shave their too regularly.

Dude! I gave up on badger brushes too. They're way too floppy and not worth the money.
I have a $175 Rooney that I never use... instead, I've been using this $2.65 boar brush, for 4 years, without a single hair falling out: http://www.bestshave.net/wooden-handled ... -p-67.html

I always felt like the 3, 4 and even 5 blade stuff was a scam. Currently use the cheapest 2 blade option from dollar shave club and works great and dirt cheap to have fresh blades whenever I want 'em. And I have thick facial hair fwiw.
Re: Gillette
razors are a scam
I use a nice rechargeable Panasonic electric. Works fine and my face isn't chewed up after.

Re: Gillette
I have broken a couple nice electric shavers in the past (coarse/thick facial hair, one of which was my dad's lol) I'm sure there are ones that would do it but after past wasted $ feel like razors are better option for me.

Re: Gillette
I like Shick Hydro better than any Gillette I've tried and buy a 12 pack of blades for about 25-30. Last me a year.
I only shave twice a week and change blade once a month but could go longer.
Blades last longer if you dry them off good after use. Otherwise they corrode making you think they are dull.
And coupons are your friend.

Well, I can walk without crutches today, as long as I take baby steps. I have a doctor's appointment in a few hours, and will probably go back to work on Monday or Tuesday. Unfortunately, I had to cancel an interview for a higher paying job. But at least it looks like Imight be back to normal in a week or two, without surgery. Thanks for asking.

Re: Gillette
Stay away from that drug store and user amazon or Costco for you blades if you require Gillette Fusion.
Re: Gillette
Gene, how much do you spend on shaving? I was at a mall in Atlanta Friday and there was a shaving store. I didn't even go in because it looked rediculously expensive. I did however spend 45 bucks on myself at the Body Shop. Their tea tree oil bodywash is AWESOME!!
fuck
Re: Gillette
I use the same gillette razor blade for literally weeks and weeks... I keep it in the shower, hop in, brutally hot water, get my skin all nice and loosened up, heat up/rinse razor blade really well, shave with just hot water, rinsing often, rinse after really well, hang up the razor, hop out of the shower, go on about my day.
I think the less crap you put on your razor blades the longer they last. It helps that I've got naturally smooth, oily skin and I look about 15 years younger than I am (at least if you ignore the full head of salt-n-pepper hair)

Re: Gillette
I'm seriously considering going the Merkur route. Fuck spending 8-10 bucks for a couple of refills on a 10 cent razor handle.

I've spent tons, but I have a bunch of shit I don't use.
Stuff I use regularly or constantly.
Merkur 38r = $50
Gillette swede platinum blades. Unobtanium. I paid $.50 a blade , but they last about 20 shaves.
Proraso cream is $10. It lasts maybe 2 months or so if you use it every day.
My aftershave is like $17 for 4 oz. it lasts at least a month
My shave brush is a Proraso boar brush. $16. It lasts forever.
That's about it.
Since you can't get swede blades, you must settle for Russian Gillettes. Blades are like $.20 a piece, and last 3-5 shaves.
I highly recommend creamo brushless cream. $7 at target. No need for a brush. Lasts a while.

I am starting to get old. I was leaning over a sofa to close a venetian blind and I tore 80% of my left calf muscle. This happened last Tuesday. I went to the dr. on Friday. He prescibed rehab, so I start that this afternoon. Yesterday was my first day without crutches. I can walk with small baby steps.

Ry Manchu wrote:So I need new razors and I go to the drug store this morning. I like Gillette Fusion refills. 4 count is now $21.99. The new 2 count is $13.99. Or I can buy a handle and two blades for $12. Does it cost -$2 to make the handle. Is there a handle production facility somewhere willing to pay to make handles like the B stage bands on Ozzfest. Are handles government subsidized like sugar and corn? Are they using an accounting trick like Enron or America Online, mark-to-market?
They give you a discount on the handle package so you are stuck buying their brand's blades for it.
I use an electric shaver/trimmer and dollar store 10 pack blades for around the neck area. My beard is really soft and easy to shave, I don't even need shaving foam...

As in Long Handle Classic? That was my first double edge. I still have it. Good razor.
nice price on that Badger brush. Looks like a great buy. Those weren't around when I started. The cheapest badger was a Simpson for $30+.
Proraso shave soaps = awesome. You will be very happy. Those are forgiving because they are soft. No need to grind the brush into it. Harder soaps DO take grinding.
Personna blades. Blue or red? Both are good. reds work a bit better for me. good price. better than derby, merkur, bic, treet, nacet, concorde, etc etc etc.
I've probably tried 75 different blades, and both personnas are probably in the top ten.
