I have the same thing when I go from listening to something more scooped to something more midrangey.

Makes the midrangey tone sound kind of ratty at first

Tone is very subjective. I rather like it how Michael Casswell put it when he dubbed what he didn't like as "un-cool tones"

Idiot Box is one of my favorite ballsy tones. Although that's his go to rock heavy tone.

I feel like I tend to try to have an element of that in my tone.
No idea what he used.
Had a single recto, but didn't / couldn't get it to sound like that. Any where near it(I know it's a recorded, layered, and mixed tone)

I really dig that tone!

I picked up their Blu-Ray disc "Alive at Red Rocks" and if I remember correctly Mike was using an older Marshall. I can't identify it, but I think it could be a JMP of some sort. I was really surprised, because I thought he was a Rectifier guy... That being said, I really loved his tone in the concert.

But as far as the original topic goes, it really is weird how different the same amp can sound with different eq, mastering, processing, etc.

Or playing a Tremoverb on modern/solid state rectifier then switching over to a cranked ac30 top boost. You start asking yourself if your amp broke. Try it the other way round, and the Tremoverb just sounds like fizz. But both are awesome.

AFAIK, he started out with two Tremoverb combos, at some point switched to a Marshall/ ac30 setup, then for their last tour switched back. I imagine in the studio he uses whatever gets the sound he wants for the song, but you can usually hear if it's a mesa distortion vs. something else.

I like all Incubus for different reasons. Even the latest one, which most Incubus fans hate. I think it's got loads of great melodies, songs etc... it's just a completely different style with hardly any distorted guitar.

Hell, he's using a Jazzmaster too.
sounds a lot like the original recording (most likely a PRS into a Recto) even though it's live....same type of tone at least. not sure how they do that?

I listened to the entire Incubus discography today.....I have to say, I was overly harsh on the albums from "Crow" on.
I kind of liked them now. I haven't really listened to Incubus for years, and pretty much stopped when "Crow" came out.
It's just different, the band changed, and that's hard to overcome. Definitely not as many "hits" on that last couple albums tho.

Same with Deftones, but I've only made it up to White Pony so far today. Although, I don't think there's a Deftones album I dislike.....as I've kept up with them for the most part over the years.
