I love the dude. Didn't know shit about him until one day I stumbled upon this video with him and Bramhall. Good stuff.

So in other words you wish Dr. Phil played guitar?

See i feel like we're not listening to the same person because what i've been talking about is the unexpected nature. Whether from genre to genre or phrasing of the song or solos, from smooth to screaming, dripping in style. Some of the songs are uniform as would be expected but i'd agree maybe not dangerous... he sticks to the roots... but i don't find most of his music expected.

to me the album seemed like all "guitarist" albums are: "say dude, you play a mean guitar. lets write some songs around that and make an album"
the songs dont hit, they cover generic rock and blues themes, etc. meanwhile when the guitar solos come in they are played well.

not a hit on GCJR, just the genre.

DBII is a bad motherfucker too. For a few years in a row I attended NAMM and DBII and I were always on the same flight. I was tempted to roll up to him like, "You're lefty. I'm lefty. Lets grab a beer."

Full disclosure: I've also been playing in this genre for a long time now. What Gary is doing is extremely similar to what I play so maybe I am being unfairly critical. :idk:

Or since its such familiar territory for me it seems more expected to me than it does for you? Or a combination of all of these things.

Again though, in no way am I trying to slam Gary. I respect the hell out of him and am super proud for all he's accomplished. :)

And this is exactly what I'm talking about. Well said. I tried to avoid this on my Son of Fire record but whether I was successful or not is for the listener to decide. :idk:

Does he use a Analogman Fuzz of some sort?

It appears he changes up often.

He was using this setup:

an RMC Wah, Analog Man Analog Delay, Ibanez Tube Screamer, Analog Man Astrotone Fuzz, and Fulltone Octafuzz

now he's using this:

for fuzz: MXR La Machine and Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Mini

I just bought his new live album the other day, cause I also got the new Big Wreck and Pear Jam live at Leeds album. Almost done with pj, then GCJ next. The pearl jam is 3 hours long I believe.

I bought his CD and wasn't that impressed. I like it enough, but I was expecting something less poppy and more bluesy or Hendrix like. His older stuff is probably better than what the big record company made him record :idk:
Guitars: '90 Gibson LP Studio, '14 PRS Custom 22, EVH Black&Yellow, Squire Pro Tone Strat
Amp and Cab Bugera 1990 or 1960 into an Orange 2x12 w/Heritage G12M's or Peavy 2x12 w/Seventy 80's
FX: the pedals I build

Historically I think he has been noted as using the Analogman Astro Tone and Fulltone Octafuzz (often without the octave).
