The French Martini

My dad used to make these and I would sneak a sip when he would step out of the room, this is back in the mid to late 70s.

Extra dry gin with a small chunk of pineapple on the bottom of the glass, then a few drops of cognac on top. I've run across a few French Martini recipes but the ones I've seen call for vodka and pineapple juice and various other things I'm not interested in.

Never tried those but over the holidays I'll have a few here and there, 70s dad style.

Orange Cognac is the stuff of legend in martinis. Just a hint so it doesn't get too heavy, but it's great.

Nice addition to an old fashioned if you're not a traditionalist as well. Extra bonus if you can find some cherry brandy to top it with.

Tonight it is Michter's Bourbon. I actually prefer the Rye for its spiciness but this is damn smooth.

Still no vermouth, but forgot I had these buried in the fridge:

Dirty martini it is!

I know that's more ice than necessary, but this gin is strong enough I can ice it like that and still taste it an hour or so later with the final sip. :thu:

I'm going to drink a bunch of 2 buck chuck while I make pizza from scratch.

it's my Friday ritual now. Of course, the wife has a headache, so she won't drink anything.

The $2 chuck ($4 now) was fucking disgusting. It was the 2017 red blend. Wretched. It was still alcohol though.

How did this thread sink so low?

Remnants of my 21 year work anniversary. The two that have impressed me the most are:
MONTELOBOS ESPADÍN MEZCAL JOVEN
The Glenlivet Nadura Peated Cask

The Mezcal is a truly beautiful amalgamation of sweetness, salt and smoke. It's about as close to a smoke-house flavor as I've gotten in an alcohol outside of an Islay, while still retaining that signature Agave fruitiness in the final flavor. I've heard rumors this makes a smashing margarita, and I have a feeling I'll have to try that before it runs out.

The Glenlivet is bottled cask strength and gives a creamy feel, fruity overtone, and a beautiful peat throughout. Absolutely the most balanced Scotch I've tasted, where no one part overwhelms any other. For as much as I love my smoke bombs, and I always will, this one tastes like what you sip after winning the lottery and you're waiting for the hookers and blow to arrive.

There's a cool liquor store near my new crib. It's kind of like a booze museum; I can spend an hour there looking at all the shit they've got!
I spotted some Pimms #1 in the appertif section. It's an ingredient in more than one Tiki cocktail and I've always wanted to try it.
Ha! This shit has a trippy buzz! It's 50 proof and tastes like Jager Meister but, not as sweet and not as syrupy.
I mixed it 50/50 with ginger ale (as recommended) and it's not bad but, I man, I feel like I've been hittin on the 420!!!

That reminds me, I need to go hunt down some good absynth again. Been a few years since I woke up naked in the bathtub trying to cover myself with a washcloth for warmth.

I had a little bit of Monkey Shoulder last night but, honestly, I'm bored with everything. There's certainly a bunch of stuff I haven't tried, but they're all just slightly different takes on the same topics (Scotch, Bourbon, Tequila, Vodka, Gin, etc.). Beer rarely sounds good unless it's hot outside and the few mixed drinks I like are a pain in the ass to do at home. Too many ingredients to stock/too much effort. So, :idk:
I Love the smell of nitrocellulose in the morning.

For all the praise Monkey Shoulder gets, I was seriously underwhelmed with it when I tried it. It's passable, but just that.

it's an entry level Scotch at best..... but.... compared to other big name blends on the market its better IMO..... I'd take Monkey Shoulder over Johnny Walker, Dewars and a bunch of other blends all day long

^ Pretty much this... It's not great, but it's decent and reasonably priced. It fills the gap when I go to the store and don't want to spend $50 on Aberfeldy 12...

For a quick cocktail, I keep True Lemon packets around - it mixes in quickly and works well with rum, whiskey and vodka. I sometimes add a packet of sweetener as well.

what price range is that? - I find $30 to be the sweet spot for price/quality ratio of bourbon

Yup. In the under thirty bucks category, there are infinite bourbons that will taste better than most scotch blends.

I'll be honest though, I'm not really a blended scotch kinda guy. Single malts with at least some peat tend to be my wheelhouse. Actually, my favorites are smoke bombs like Laphroaig or Ardbeg, but anything that gives me a little tantalizing smoke/peat makes me happy.

But, alas, I'm not made of money and can't afford to drink that all the time. So bourbon is my usual.
