Below 7.5/10 - A pretty good film. Lots of recognisable actors (that aren't A list hollywood actors), good pace, nice setting. Could have been a tad better, but I like the way it was done.

Saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Probably about an 8/10. I really dig where they are headed here, and the fact they dropped the whole reboot shit (Marky Mark) in favor of supporting the old movies with the backstory. Granted it's a bit of a depressing story at this point due to knowing where they're going to end up, but it's really well done. Really dig the ending shot before the credits roll and the symbolism of man fading away while the apes stand tall.

Now I'm curious how they're going to round out the "war."

Snowpiercer is on Amazon now (to rent) so I watched it last night.

As a movie: 6/10
I have heard it compared to District 9 and Sunshine (two of my favorite movies) but it just doesn't hold up. Frankly, I was expecting each train car to be more strange than the last but they didn't pull it off. Some great acting, though. Tilda Swinton always brings the strangeness.

As a metaphor: 9/10
The whole concept is great and eerily mimics how life seems to actually work. Basically, if you are at the ass end of the train, you are fucked coming and going. If you are the head of the train, there will be many attempts at revolution and one will eventually take everything down.

Actually, I thought it would make an awesome video game. You play as Curtis trying to get to the front of train and each car is weird and violent in different ways.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)- 5.5/10 I guess I'm just used to the 50s version. This seems boring and bland and not very interesting at all. It could be I knew the basic story, but I didn't connect much with the characters and it was all just kinda meh.

Sabotage...2/10

I knew it was going to be dumb from the get go. I thought it would at least be entertaining and that was sadly not the case. Schwarzengger plays the commanding officer of a team of DEA agents who bust dealers and siphon off cash for themselves in the process. Stupid dialog, horrific acting and really a wasted opportunity for a good dumb action flick. The last movie I watched with him was Escape Plan. It was a piece of sh*t; but it was a fairly action packed, watchable piece of sh*t  I turned this one off after a half hour as I couldn't take it anymore.

Balls of Fury - 7/10
For dumb comedy, it's gold. The way they take on the standard underground fight movie format (used by Van Damme and Bruce Lee to name a couple) and managing to pull in people that have actually starred in some of those movies themselves (Jason Scott Lee in two separate parts, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and a few others) sorta made the movie for me. Christopher Walken was amazing as always. He needs to do more straight up comedies. I wonder if when Fanboys was made the big dude thought he'd end up singing Pour Some Sugar on Me with Christopher Walken?

It's not a perfectly made movie, but it's damn funny.

It's way funnier than I thought it would be, but not the greatest laugh-along of all time. There's some moments that are pretty good though. It does depend on you not questioning the reality of some of shit that goes on, but I think that's a given with those two.

300 2: 6.5/10 Entertaining shut your brain off and enjoy the action movie. Would've been a 7 but dinged them .5 for slow mo abuse. Good lord. The movie is dumb as fuck in so many ways but overall it works because its not trying to be overly intelligent, just killing people and spraying CGI blood around.

The Rock: 7/10 This movie is one of the few Michael Bay films I like. However, its 100% as shitty as his other movies. So much of what happens makes no fucking sense at all. Why the hell is Nicholas Cage worried about getting the guidance chip out of the last poison gas container? THE MISSILE HAS FUCKING FIRED YOU MORON! And, did you notice the gov't/good guys not being able to do anything right?

Send in Seal Team, they all get killed. President has to make a decision on whether to firebomb the island, MAKES THE DECISION AFTER THE DEADLINE which fortunately because the main badguy has a heart doesn't lead to the death of millions. Pilot drops firebomb "on target" BUT MISSES because he, like all the good guys except Connery and to a lesser degree Cage is a complete fuckup.

God, its so bad, but I still enjoy it.

The Hole - 7/10
Modern teen horror movie with a formula style plot but the formula works and they did a great job in casting. And :thu: for getting the neighbor girl into a bikini and spending an inordinate amount of time watching her swim around and jump in it. Ladder climbing in tight white jeans is a double bonus plus. Little kid was annoying, but that's to be expected. The basic plot is there's a hole that shows you your greatest fears and desires all wrapped into one, and it's in the basement, not on the hottay neighbor's body.

The Haunting - 8/10
Great spanish film with a decent english dub (streamed so I didn't have a choice to watch with subtitles). It would have been a 9/10 if not for some of the language flubs in the dub. Family moves into a house and you think it's the typical haunting story but it ends up being a place where a religions sub-sect committed an attrocity to try and clear an evil spirit. It gets deeper than that, and does a good job with character development in the last half of the film. First half has too many questions to really nail down characters, and by the time you do you realize the story has you hooked. Would watch again.

The Toybox - 5/10
Fun to watch, but I wouldn't call it an epic film by any means. Story that follows a family from when the kids were kids to when they're college age, and how everything sort of falls apart for them when the daughter brings her boyfriend home from college for the holidays. Shit gets real, baby brother goes full potato, it's mostly caused by the sister's abuse of him when they were kids, and the family all being a little wack-a-doodle to begin with. Like I said, fun to watch, but not really a good movie. Fairytale based slasher horror seems to be the category this would fit under.

star trek into darkness finally:
on par with the first one, good watch. some cool tie ins.
docked points for:
gratuitous lens flare (of fucking course. but i think this was his rock bottom which he apologized for. stahp). holy shit.
gravity scene....um, there on a fucking spaceship. if the gravity fails, why are they falling? that was a pretty big fucking faux pas for a sci fi flick. come on man.

He apologized for lens flare on the first one and promised he'd do better from here on out. Sadly, having watched the movies back-to-back, he really did tone it down a LOT in Into Darkness. Him and Michael Bay need to team up. Closeup action shots of lens flare constantly interrupted with explosions.

went on a binge viewing of mostly old movies that i hadnt seen.

the host (bong joon-ho one). 8/10 - production values a bit under hollywood fare, but characters, story and ending were also not standard hollywood, which was refreshing. there were also a number of really striking camera shots.

followed up with bong joon-ho's current movie - snow piercer - 7/10, quite slow at the beginning but it picks up with some good set pieces and some brutal claustrophobic action shots. tilda swinton has a memorable character. non hollywood ending.

dredd - 6/10 brutal in your face gun play. that's the whole movie. some stunning visuals, but the director was smart to keep it relatively short.

world war z - 5/10. noticed pitt's acting . this movie didnt do much for me. it was OK but seemed predicable and mainstream.
