Recording Stories--i haz one

Post by Dickarms »

this one i'll never forget. Was tracking guitars over at Anton Puchansky's house with Markdude. we were running from the orange TV50 through a gibson power stealth into the DAW with cab sims of some marshalls with 57s, etc.

something is rattling like crazy in the room when i play low strings or neck pickup. we're checking all over the desk, moving pen containers, etc, trying to figure it out.

turned out to be his fucking Grammy's sitting atop his monitors. the realization was priceless "oh, it's my grammys"
  :cop:

got any studio stories?

the other one i got is when we were tracking at the art institute of austin, and we had a time block which we were chewing through nicely...before we found out that there was a scheduling conflict, and we had to give up the studio to the next guys, cutting 2 hours off our session. it was free, we were doing it for the school, so cant complain really.

the next guys walk in.....a pair of DJs with their shirts off. WTF do you need a studio to record you already recorded music?

Makes for epic bragging rights! "Yeah, we recorded our EP with a three time grammy winner!" :D

Sorry I couldn't make it - Amy and I had errands to run all day Saturday.

Did Mark bring his Les Paul over? How was it?

Also, did you get a chance to plug into his Leslie?!?

Sure.

I recorded my drums, for the last record, in a pro studio. Its a lot of physical effort to play grind drums. Especially since I lack all the technical aspects many drummers in the style use to gain speed without exerting much effort. That isnt me. My speed is simply drumming as fast as I possibly can at times while still hitting the drums hard. Very physical. After 4 hours straight and bout 2 buckets worth of sweat I was running out of steam. The producer said, "I have some Emergency Jake for these situations?" I had a pretty good idea what he meant, but asked anyway. "What?" lol.. He said come in to the listening room.. Apparently they already broke out the coke. They all were pretty jacked up in there. So, sure. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.. We paid for 8 hours that day.. Consumed some Jake and proceeded to knock 15 seconds off the song we were working on! lol. We werent playing to a click, and after a little Jake I couldnt play as slow as the scratch tracks we were using, so the bassist was there, he plugged in and we played it live. It went from just over 2 minutes track length to 1:46! ha.. He could hardly keep up. But its the take that made the record..

The next few days followed suit, with Jake showing up earlier and earlier. By the 4th day and final Day, he was there first thing..

glad jake could come to that party.

i have to commend our drummer, he nailed his session. very little redos/mistakes. passion, timing...and his kit sounded fucking fantastic. just the raw tracks sound great, cant wait to get into actually mixing
