Adjustable impedance, what a thought!

Post by colejustesen »

I am loving the adjustable impedance on my ART Pro MPA II. Some of my mics impedance are lower than the impedance on my interfaces which ultimately caused the signal to be very bright. Two of which have an impedance of 200Ω and one is 370Ω and these made them really not the best in versatility for me. Now that I can dial in the impedance, these mics have really come to life!

I am loving the way the AKG D40 sounds running at ~200Ω; coupled with tube warmth and compression makes for great sounding recordings!

The downside, it really threw me off for speaker placement... What I thought was optimal before has now been altered. The result was worth the effort.

If you haven't already, I highly suggest finding a preamp that allows you to adjust the impedance :thu:

Yeah, man. Even old standby mics will shock you when you can adjust impedance. The e609 and SM57 or SM58 sound much less harsh with impedance down around 300-500ohms. Some mics lose sensitivity much below that, but that's what the volume knob on the amp is for. :rawk:

It's fun to mess with impedance and gain and see the way they affect each other. Tone changes quite a lot with low impedance and high gain compared to high impedance and low gain. Much less harsh up top, much fuller on the bottom and mids.

Here is something quick I threw together... the mic is an AKG D40 on my Fane Medusa 100 speakers for both tracks.

This new preamp/compressor/interface setup has been yielding fantastic results! I don't know if you listened to this track on my drum jam thread, but this is with my Superlux S241 (aka CAD e90) SDC... This is having it set to the proper impedance for this mic; and I must say I love the recorded tone I got here!

Also, thanks for the comment!

It is like I got a bunch of new mics to play with  I can't wait to really dig into these and see what they really can do!
