don't you always use a comp gene? where are you using the CAD-- is that only for mixing?

not to crush any wishes.. i LOVE the idea of having something made by a company i really like that sounds really good.. but i do okay with VST's honestly-- at least for compressors.. but it's been YEARS since i used hardware comps, and i surely never had high class biz like an 1176 lying around, real or otherwise. mostly dbxes.

yeah.. but $600 for a single channel comp to record bass when a guy records mostly synth, guitar, drum machine, and no vocals?

hrmph. i love good gear. but most of that comp work's gonna be stereo or unnecessary. so if you're gonna help, you gotta pitch for two.

If I like the WA-12 as much as I think and hope I do, I could see getting another. My interface has two inputs. So it makes perfect sense to me.

I will most certainly grab another Fathead Mic in the next couple of months.

i am a firm supporter of buying recording gear in twos. if i was meant to buy in ones i would have one ear in the middle of my forehead.

Yeah, I use the hardware comp for everything.

Chain goes :
1. Wa-12 preamp
2. Cad compressor
3. Tc 1128 eq
4. Roland rsp-550 reverb
5. Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

I use that hardware for everything. Bass, guitar, drums, etc.

I think one would be awesome for mixing (routing tracks through it and printing new ones). But IIRC you guys are using the 2i2 and the Blackjack, so unfortunately you don't have enough outputs to really facilitate that.

For tracking I think it would be a good investment for a little bit of compression on the way in for bass. If drums and vocals, definitely a worthwhile purchase. For just recording guitars? It's just GAS, man. Not really gonna help all that much. If anything maybe Gene would get some mileage out of it since he does dreamy clean stuff most of the time, but I know Pablo likes cranked Marshalls. For recording overdriven stuff there's really not much point since you generally need little to no compression and software is adequate anyway. Hardware compression really only has much of an advantage for highly dynamic sources with big transients, like drums.

I use a compressor pedal when recording clean guitar or clean slide guitar for sustain with a mic'd amp.
When I record direct guitar the sims provide the compression or, if needed I can add a compressor plugin.

I have a Really Nice Compressor in my lunch box but, I only use it for vocals.
It's kind of overkill on guitar, especially when using a compressor pedal or sims.

That being said... if I wanted to try something different, like recording clean and direct, without sims, a compressor out front would be helpful.... but again, a pedal would work.
