Advice please. Mackie MR8 MK3 Powered Monitors

Post by JerEvil »

I can get these new for $179 each with free shipping. I had the Mk1 version of these and they were pretty rad.

Looking to replace my M-Audio BX-5's. For $358 shipped it seems like a no brainier. Anything else I Should be looking at?

I'll be using for recording as well as monitoring my Kemper.

For that price, it might be worth getting them just because it's such a good deal. I haven't tried those in particular but the MR stuff is great value for the money (used to have the subwoofer and it was fantastic). I'm sure they will be an improvement over the BX-5s. But if your budget is $360ish for a pair, I'd try to stretch that to $400 and get Equator D5s (they used to be $300 new but they're still a great buy at $400). Actually I just checked the site and they're out of stock (and you can only buy them direct from Equator I believe), so I'd try to score some used ones for less anyway. They're smaller so they'll have a bit less bass response, but they're by far the best monitors under $500 or so that I've tried. The only thing I didn't like about them is that I felt they were a little bit directional and I invested in some stands to get the tweeters right at ear level (which made a big difference), but seriously, they're really great.

Talked with Loop and ended up on a solid deal on the newer M-Audio BX8 Carbons.
