Bit different from me, but I am getting into Dozer and Red Fang so wanted to get into the RATTY looser tones so I had a jam, came up with some riffs and here it is:
I also played with a VST Neve compressor that I had overlooked and will fit this style of music, added flange to one side and put some room verb on dat ass.
Also..First clip I recorded with evidence lyric cables.

Nice! A lot more raw than where I'm at these days, lol, but powerful sound, mang!

Going from memory, I think the distortion was about 8 out of 10 and the volume was around 4 out of 10 with the tone around 8 out of 10 and the mod engaged.
The mod is by gtrwrks and he can't remember what he did to it. It adds a lot of bloom/bass. If the off position is an indication of the stock RAT, you won't get this tone out of it. It will be more snarky and weaker but you may compensate with some EQ.

If you can get it up to nearly full gain without it just farting out, might be the ruetz (no idea how to actually spell it) mod - less overall max gain, but lots more bass coming through. On the other hand, despite being a popular mod didn't like it that much when I tried it, and your clip sounds awesome. so maybe he upped the cap values.

Yep. I was thinking gtrwrks must be good mods because you don't see people selling them much. So they fall into the keepers variety.

Awesome tone! I have never owned a RAT but I always wondered how they sound. What is a good example of a stock RAT tone? Chuck's description of distortion right before fuzz is right on the money and I like it.

On iPad so linking to YouTube is a pain, but check out Thrice- Firebreather, Radiohead - The Bends, Pink Floyd - What Do You Want From Me, and Bloc Party - Hunting for Witches. All examples of rat tone that show how varied it can be.

Sweet. That is about the only Radiohead album I like tbh. I forgot about the Floyd tune but despite the lack of Waters, it is a solid album. I have never listened to Thrice before this, but that is a heavy tone. In a non-metal way. I like it.

It was the first Floyd album I heard so it was my introduction to them. I still like it now, it's brilliantly produced. I think the only area it falls down is that it doesn't have some deeper meaning/ theme/ inspiration like earlier Floyd work. When I listen to Animals, I can hear the venom in Waters' scathing attack on corporate greed and the music supports it, with Gilmour playing some fucking nasty, harsh tones that work with the message. Division Bell at times feels like the aim was just to make beautiful sounding beds of music together for Gilmour to solo over with his awesome tone, they even outsourced the lyric writing. Don't get me wrong, I've got lots of time for tasty solos and beautiful music, but it doesn't fulfil me quite as much as some of the Waters-lead stuff.
And yeah, Thrice are/were awesome! Tom Van Devan who recently joined up here (check the effects forum) did an awesome clip a few years ago of that riff with his modded Rat through an AC30H.
