Richard Thompson, Anyone????

Post by TurboPablo »

One of the four heads on my Mount Rushmore of Guitar Gods. If you don't know his work, it's breathtaking. He is easily the best Hybrid Picker I have ever seen. His songwriting, both lyrically and musically, is beyond brilliant. If you need more reasons to watch......

He's Claptons' favorite guitar player.

This is the BEST live version of his most famous song

I obviously haven't seen the right things yet (at work, didn't watch videos).
I have caught him on a few awards shows - and haven't been impressed.
I always got the impression he was more of a writer than performer.
Will check out the links you posted later.

Been lucky to see him twice, in a restored 20's theater in the next town. He is known for that minor-key dirge style of his (my friend calls it 'rock for the plague years'), but his shows have a fair bit of fire in them. His voice in his 50s was much much better than when younger.

He's one of those guys I wish I could force to collaborate with others. Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello and Steve Winwood, locked in a house for four weeks with a recording crew. Maybe throw Ry Cooder in there too.

I first saw him back in 91 during the Rumor and Sigh tour. Shawn Colvin opened for him and came out and jammed the first few songs of his set. He initially came out solo/acoustic and plaayed 1952 Vincent. It blew my mind to bits.
