Hagar with Satch at the Stern show

Post by GuitarBilly »

This sounds great. Hagar still sounds great and with a killer band with Satch, Mike Anthony and Jason Bonham.

Satch is playing a goddamn BlackStar ID Core practice amp and sounds amazing and he did a really good job playing Ed's parts with his personal flair.

The song starts at 1:30.

Also, that's how you do modeling. Put your drummer on an e-kit and everything falls into place without the drums swallowing the guitars. The mix sounds great.
Guitars:

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

I can’t speak for Satch using a Blackstar but I’ve seen Sammy a couple times and the last time Vic Johnson and Sammy both had Blackstar amps. While I don’t think I’d ever buy one, they didn’t sound bad live. A good friend has one and he uses it for recording. However his other amp is the venerable DSL which he also loves.

Watched the vid. Solid performance. Sam sounds great for his age and this band will do some fun stuff. May have to go to hear some of these tunes live one more time.

Im not bad mouthing Satch. I like him and his playing. But it sounds like a great player who still needs to practice for this. I can only speak from my own experience doing this Slayer thing.. I figured I could do these in my sleep and I had to practice these lot more than I thought I would to get em sounding as good as we do. Thats honestly how I saw his playing.. . Some of these werent ready for prime time.. And this is a primetime deal they're doing.. On another note, I thought Sammy sounded suprisingly good. .

Yeah I can see that they need more practice. Sammy even said this was the very first time they were playing these songs (no rehearsals). I'm sure they will tighten everything up before the tour.

That aside, I like where Satch is going with this. He's playing the parts correctly but playing them his own way. He knows how to walk that line, which is extremely hard.

I see comments online saying they should use this or that Eddie clone and how they would "nail it" and to me that would be the worst idea ever. Because first off, no, they wouldn't truly nail it, no one really can.... and second, I wouldn't want to see someone trying to mimic Eddie in that environment. Satch has his own style and that's cool. The end of "Right Now" where he did that melodic part with the Sustainer is the perfect example of this, since that was 100% a Joe Satriani moment.

The only other player I could see doing this is Wolgang and he does get closer to Eddie's playing than Satch, but that's a different story, since he is Ed's kid. He doesn't want to do it and that's fine, I understand his reasons.
But all the "Instant Eddie" Ramen Noodlers out there, ugh no thanks.

I hope they come around me; I'll go see em for sure

I've seen VH with Sammy once, VH with Dave once, and Satch once over the years

The VH with Sammy show was peak EVH Teeth era, and the one with Dave was for ADKOT so both they were subpar for different reasons lol

The Satch show was fucking incredible

Yeah he was using the TMP and the Fender powered speaker. Killer monitor, if you're into that sort of thing? I wondered if Sammy used the Blackstar turd?

There are some good sounds on tap on the Fender but it definitely is operating as if it's still 2016 or whatever. Hopefully they'll keep at it but who knows?

This is exactly the same thing as the Pantera situation. As much as we would all like to believe that all these inhuman players can be swapped in and out of whatever band we like at the drop of the hat without any perceptible change; that's not how it works. This will be a fun time. I will say I'd like to hope that Sammy will pull out some better deeper VH cuts instead Ain't Talk Bout Love and Running With the Devil but he's never been a deep cuts kind of guy on his own material so I am not holding my breath. I've seen the Circle before and they were a great time. But Joe is definitely going to be another notch up.
