Yeah I never needed a boost with 5150s and never had the gain over 12 o'clock. :lol:

That's how I ran mine, preamp out to Two Notes WOS and use their power amp sims, EL34 and 6L6 to get that power amp sound. I have a Suhr Reactive Load IR and its been invaluable... can even just run an aux and headphones into the Suhr and play direct.

By way the amp doesn't need a load if you're running the headphones out or the preamp out.

As long as there is nothing plugged into the speaker outs, the circuit shorts the output and keep the amp safe to use.

From the amp designer, at another forum:

For a tube amp it is better to drive a short than an open. If you are worried about it, just plug a dummy jack into the headphone output and it mutes the power amp. Yeah, the BL was never really my thing because of the need for a boost. These don't need one.

I didn't want to but I'm in real estate hell at the moment, getting this new house so it was good to free up some cash.

Besides, I use the DSL most of the time anyway.

New studio is going to be killer though. Huge basement with 2 separate rooms for live and tracking. I'm super excited about this new home.

Badlander. Block letter would have plenty I'd say. Badlander has enough gain but it's a little bit more of a fight unboosted.
