Just wrapped up a build

Post by _ej_ »

Been working on this for a buddy over the past year plus. Pine body, mahogany neck with a maple board. Went for a whitewashed finish on the body to moderate success. The pickups are a Jess Loureiro WRHB and a Lace Sensor HG1000. Nice and thick tones and the pickups complement each other nicely.

Gonna let the neck settle for a few days and give it a full setup.

Edit: Took some better pics

This is killer man. I'm happy to see you building again. Your guitars are really unique.
I think a solid pickguard would've probably looked cooler but that's not a big deal. I love this body shape too. It's hard to come up with unique body shapes these days that are actually cool. Great job dude.

Looks like a Rick Turner or something. Pine + good pickups = awesome tones.

Oh heck yeah. I bet that sounds awesome. Let’s see the back of the neck! Really sweet Dude.

What's the benefit of the quartersawn mahogany necks? I've owned a couple guitars with them and they definitely looked different, in a cool way, but I never understood if there were other benefits.

“Maple has diffuse pores in its grain structure, so as far as stability is concerned, it does not have more flex in one direction over another. Most vintage instruments were Flat Sawn, simply because of the availability of wood in the ’50s and ’60s. A byproduct of this is there are plenty of people who feel Flat Sawn sounds better or feels better than Quarter Sawn. There are also people who feel that Quarter Sawn is punchier, and some companies are praised for using straight Quarter Sawn lumber on their necks. My opinion after building guitars for 40 years is there is basically zero difference. Quarter Sawn has a slight advantage in that it is more dimensionally stable in the width direction. However, we dry our wood very carefully so this is not an issue. With roasted maple, none of it matters. Flat Sawn will also show more figuring on the side of the neck if it is for instance flame maple. Some builders exclusively use Flat Sawn, and others only use Quarter Sawn. Since I have no opinion that one is better than the other, we have decided to now offer both options on Custom builds.”

Yeah it's just a grain orientation thing. Quarter sawn is stiffer against the string tension but flat sawn is more than adequate for most guitars.

I find that I have to adjust my quartersawn necks far less than the flatsawn ones.

Beautiful! Yeah I prefer Qsawn for its stiffer feel and it’s resistance to seasonal changes.

Sweet build dude. Love the inlays, what material is that? Great choice on the woods too. I finally got around to installing the WRHB in my Pawnshop strat and it is almost perfect. I think I might want to go to 1 meg pots, but I need to give it some time before making any other changes.
