New partscaster day

Post by GuitarBilly »

A friend of mine gave me this "burgundy mist" body a while ago (I think it's a Squier but I am not entirely sure), so I decided to build a parstcaster with it. The bridge came with the body and it's been decked and hardtailed. The neck is a Mighty Mite maple neck with an ebony board. I signed my initials on the headstock because I don't like blank headstocks but didn't want to put a fake logo on it either. For pickups I went with a DiMarzio Tone Zone and 2 Fender American Standard pickups I had laying around. Tuners are Hipshot locking tuners.
The guitar looks, sounds and plays great for around $250 all in (I only had to buy the neck, tuners and pickguard)

Sweet guitar!

I did something similar....picked up an old Squire for $25, completely replaced all the parts and electronics, sanded down the neck, did some work on the fretboard, and ended up with this. I intentionally used GFS pups and parts as I wanted to see if I could come up with something for little to no investment. All in all its no too bad....all in for about $200. I call it the "Cheap-Caster"!

Nothing, really. Very different than any Duncan pickup. It has a ton of low end, which is cool to bring a strat style guitar closer to a Gibson tone.

I love the ToneZone pickup. It is probably my favorite Dimarzio pickup. Well, that and the chopper. If you have not tried the half-air mod on the TZ, you should try it. It's easy to do and reverse if you don't like it. It balances the bass more with the mids and makes the pickup more dynamic. It's supposed to sound like the EVH Ernie Ball pickups. Whether it's exact or not I can't say for certain, but it definitely sweetens up the pickup.

That's interesting. I never modded a pickup before so I don't know if I feel comfortable with doing it. And honestly I like the pickup as is. But I'll look it up and see what is involved in the mod.

You basically unscrew the pickup from its baseplate and remove the metal bar with the holes that sit around the screw side of the pickup. You then slide the magnet over against the screws and put a piece of non-ferous material between the slug side and the magnet. I used a piece of heat-shrink tubing. Put it back together and play poundcake.

I need to try this. Sounds like a tweak in the right direction for some of my Charvels.
