yeah for shows he's just going to use the XXX. I taught him well.

That's for silent practice and possibly to make their demos. The GSP1101 is not a bad idea though, now that you mentioned.

For silent practice and recording he could go the plugin route. Neural Amp Modeller is free and sounds crazy good. Better than any of the modellers suggested IMO. Almost 6k free profiles of just about every amp imaginable. Pick up one of those little $30 midi controllers and you're good to go.

Is the RP1000 the same as the GSP1101 but on a pedalboard format?? Or is different?

I think it would be better/easier to get him a pedal than a rack.

pretty close, with a few differences. the RP360XP is a bit cheaper and newer, but with less knobs and footswitches.

I was watching the Tone Talk podcast today and Dave Friedman said the Hotone Ampero is a great device and the effects alone make it worthwhile. He also said the amp models sound great. That's a high compliment since he usually doesn't like any modeling.
I think I'll suggest that one. Hell I might even buy one for myself to use the effects with the EVH head.

they just came out with an even SMALLER one ... Ampero Mini  no effects loop, only one effects path, less amp models and effects, couple other differences for about half the price ($229) i still want a BIG Ampero

it really is good - i sold my bigger and more expensive Mooer GE300 right away when i got the A2S - it has great "feel" and doesn't need to be tweaked-to-death to sound good. initially spring reverbs would gobble up processing power, but that has been fixed with updates.
