Gig Report: CHIB3 Grateful Dead Tribute. Videos included.

Post by BroSlinger »

So, Friday was the 3rd edition of the carefree Grateful Dead tribute known as "C.H.I.B.". (Cigarettes, Heroin, Ice Cream, Beer)

Pros:
The weather was perfect.
My gear sounded great
The setlist was badass.
Pedalboard was perfect.
The crowd was way into it.
Everybody had fun
Everybody was happy and buzzed when all was said and done.

Cons:
24 people showed up. Expected more.
Power was insufficient. We had two incidents. Had to run around looking for another circuit twice.
The other band members showed up later than I wanted. band leader always has to do everything. oh well
My Carmen Ghia blew up during one of our power incidents. Gotta sort that out.

Yeah, sounds great for sure man. Hope the Ghia didn’t get damaged too bad. Also really happy to see the Yellow Spiral on the board. I thought you had previously said you didn’t dig it but I’m a huge Tom Cram fanboy so I’m happy it’s getting some time.

Not historically a huge fan of the Dead and by extension, not sure what they sound like. But you guys sound good! So keep it up  I dig the board. What's your signal chain like? Guitar to the Boss PSM-5---rest of your board---front of Dr. Z? Does that PSM act as a mute as well? Looks like a fun gig for you \m/

Thanks dude!

Yeah before the Ghia blew up, it was guitar -> PSM-5-->The board--> mono into Source Collider-> stereo out into Boss RC1 looper. -->stereo out into Ghia(Acoustic 2x12 with EV Force 12's) and Mazerati 30th(Two Pacific Cubes with JBL E120's). This was giving me stereo ping pong Oil can delay with stereo spring reverb. It sounded AWESOME. It still sounded awesome when I went mono with just the Mazerati.

The PSM5 is my buffer, and it's a mute when the signal goes to the tuner.

Thanks, man!

I have a feeling the Ghia issue is just a preamp tube. Hopefully, it's okay when I eventually get around to looking at it.

Yeah, the Yellow Spiral is interesting. It's super rough and raw. It does the '70 and '78 tones really well. It's essentially an MXR distortion+ (dod250). Works fine for this.

The Grey LTD and Vintage Dire Wolf were equally awesome as well. It was nice having a few flavors of dirt that would stack if need be.

I appreciate it, man. I love doing the post rock stuff, but this is more fun for everyone especially when the partying ensues. When the sun is shining, and the weather is nice, nothing hits like that dead.

I feel like my Dire Wolf sounds tits on its own but does not like to be stacked.

Stoked to see this is an ongoing project, and may be expanding - you're killing it bud! Maybe when Dead n Company call it quits this summer, you can get with Oteill and take over for JM.

Thanks, man! I really appreciate it. This whole journey has made me a better player. Plus, it's fun. It's not pop, but people can drink and smoke to it. It's loose. It's guitar filled. It's melodic. It's old timey. It's great.

If the amp issue isn't a preamp tube, check the rectifier.
If there was a power surge, it could fry the diodes... which is usually better than frying something else down the line.

You could be onto something. The cg is very sensitive to rectifier changes. I tried using a ss rectifier once and it blew the fuse.

Yup... I suppose I should have looked at the schematics first... tube rectifier.
