1987 Plexi vs Mig 50 comparison

Post by GuitarBilly »

Here we go:

Never mind my playing, just banging whatever came to mind. The plexi is brighter and more aggressive. It's THAT sound.
The Mig 50 is smoother, darker and a bit quieter, but a great sounding amp. Closer to a JTM45/Bassman deal.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

I prefer the more aggressive sound of the Plexi but the Mig does sound good, I could see them pairing up really well in a band with two guitarists

Yeah there's no doubt the plexi wins. But it's $2999 vs $799 new, so apples and oranges. The Mig is a HELL of a sleeper amp for that price. I paid $400 for it!!

You can hear the more aggressive tone of the 1987X for sure but the EHX is no slouch. It’s basically a tightened up Tweed Bassman/JTM 50 circuit. The tones are a bit beefier and darker. Not quite as gainy. But together they work. You should do an AC/DC cover with both of these and my vote is “What’s Next to the Moon.”

It’s my favorite tune off Powerage. The riffs are stupid simple but that song is so badass. It just oozes attitude.

My thoughts as well

For $400 it’s a no brainer

I think it would be killer to run these simultaneously live. I can see how the tones would really complement each other. They sound like they would complete each others missing tones.

The Marshall has the bark and bite as you expect, did you boost it around the 1 minute mark? volume seemed to change slightly

The EHX will work for sure with certain tones, wonder how it does with a boost?
