Installed a Lar-Mar PPIMV on the 1987x

Post by GuitarBilly »

My tech did it for me for 80 bucks. Totally worth it. No more dealing with attenuators etc... the tone is a bit different when the PPIMV is engaged but it still sounds awesome

With it all the way up it's completely out of the circuit.

I can use this amp anywhere now.

I'm going to take the EHX to him too.

yeah I remember seeing it in the gut shot picture you posted. The Lar-Mar is a different circuit though, it uses a double ganged pot. Definitely worth the upgrade if you have a chance, it is the most transparent MV circuit. Parts only cost 10 bucks or so.

if you want to keep it simple this guy sells the parts as a kit:

It's a bit cheaper to buy the parts separate but meh, it's only 20 bucks. Worth it for the convenience.

Then take it to your tech and he will install it for whatever the minimum shop charge it, it's a quick install.

Kruze Amps in Burbank is great if you need a tech in L.A. that really knows old Marshalls.

Thanks Billy. I'm going to think about this. Amp sounds good as is right now.

I'm also a big fan of the Lar-Mar PPIMV. Used them in 3 of my Marshall-esque amps - even works great in 2203/2204 style MV amps. I have noticed if you add a Depth/Resonance circuit it doesn't work all that well with PPIMV, but maybe its just my brain thinking its different? :idk:
Resident thread killer

I know nothing

Sterling AX40 x3
PRS SE245, SE Paul's
Jet City amps - all of them
modded 2204s
Bogner XTC 3534

I'm not sure, but I don't care for depth mods in the plexi circuit tbh.
In the 2203/4, I like it. But I can work with those amps without a PPIMV on most scenarios. Maybe not for bedroom playing, but as far as gigs go, it's relatively easy to get a good tone out of the Master Volume amps. The depth mod helps with that a lot.

So I'm cool with doing PPIMV in the NVM and the Depth mod on the MV amps without needing to do both mods in a single amp.

They effectively change the NFB loop gain, so it will screw with depth/presence.
