So what 20 watter did you have?... i think you still have a 900? Is that it in the pic? lol

Can someone update me

In a nutshell:

Decided to buy some Marshalls to a/b then

Bought a Sv20, 1987x and 2203x.

Also got a JCM900 50w on a trade.

I wasn't very impressed with the 20w. It's a good amp but I don't really gel with small amps. So it's gone

The others are still here as well my trusty DSL.

So I have 4 Marshall heads at the moment. I'm going to play them for a while and decide which ones to keep.

GuitarBilly wrote:I had one in my Runt so I am familiar with them. Honestly, they sound great and do what they claim to do really well. They add a ton of gain without changing the core tone of the amp or adding too much noise, it's a great product.

But I am not a very high gain player to begin with. I play loud and hit hard so it may sound like I have a lot of gain going but I actually don't. For illustration, I run the gain at about 7 on the JCM800. About 2 on the DSL Lead 1(not 2 o'clock, 2 on the dial). The Plexi is run at about 4. The Runt was about 1/2 way on the gain. It's not a lot of gain at all. Obviously I use a SD-1 to boost it for solos but once again the gain is turned way down on the SD-1 it's more of a clean boost.

So this mod do what they say and do it well but it's just wayyyyy too much gain for what I play.

Now that you say that, I actually remember that. And to be truthful, I think I fall into a similar range gain wise, especially after getting the Captor and being able to crank amps up enough to get significant poweramp drive. (With both the Laney and Quick Rod I think I've got the volumes higher than the channel gain)

I think because in my formative years as a guitar player my "mentor" was all about gain, I've always got it in my head to go for more gain, but in the end, the stuff I play really isn't that crazy gained out.

I had my first practice with this amp today. Sounded great but I don't think this one will make the cut. By the time I dialed it in the way I liked it, it needed an attenuator. And if I'm going to use an attenuator, I prefer the plexi. I was hoping I could get it dialed in at a good volume with the master but the master really needs to be high for the amp to deliver the goods.

So the next battle is 50w vs 100w plexis.

Swwet spot on this amp is at about 4 on the volume. That sounds amazing but it is extremely loud.

At lower volumes the amp sounds a bit....deflated. It's not awful but it's nothing special. The DSL beats it at lower volumes, easily.

Once you get the volume up, it takes off like a rocket but it's like a non-master volume amp at that point.

I will have to try that. I recently put the 2203 clone I built back to close to stock, and have been trying to find a good master setting. I run mine into a loadbox, and then reamp with a SS poweramp. I find I dont like most amps with the master very high. I think I have been keeping the master around 9 oclock.

Today I remembered I have one of those "Volume Box" by JHS and I decided to try it with the 800. Well, it works!! It made the volume taper much more useable.

On the Plexi the Volume Box does not work at all, since tit takes out the power amp distortion, but on the 800 it's a great way to use this amp at smaller venues and practices. I am reconsidering keeping the 800 now.

Also try boosting it witha GEQ mids only up. Really makes the 800 more plexi like.I used an old Boss GEQ with mine.

Boss GE-7. 800 and 1600 boosted. Use the level control to add or subtract added gain.

It tried this last night with Ibanez GEQ10. Sounds good, thanks for the tip.
