Metallica/Pantera/MVH tour - anyone going?
Just bought 3 tix for the Nov 3rd show in St Louis. Wife and I plan on suprising our son with it for his birthday in June. Most of the nosebleeds were sold out, and said fuck it and went in the middle row in front of the press box. About fainted when I saw the final price, but buy once; cry once.
Anyone else going?

Yeah we’re doing both days when they hit Detroit. I’ve seen Metallica twice. My wife never has. Hoping the set lists between the two days are different enough. I wanna see the openers the first day. She wants to see the openers on the second. Go figure lol.

Best chance for us would be Chicago, since my wife's dad lives there and it's close to my wife and son's bdays. Guess we will see.

Got snake pit tickets for Edmonton August 2024. Wish they were coming to Vancouver, but it will be a fun road trip! I’ve seen them about 8 times, but always from the nosebleeds. Decided to splurge this time as they don’t have too many tours left in them and it might be my last chance.

I've seen Metallica so many times I lost count. And Pantera with Dime and Vinnie. So idk.. if they're were playing locally I'd definitely go but the closest to us is NJ, which is still quite a drive, 5-6 hours away.. so I will probably not go.

I don't like this whole Pantera without Dime and Vinnie thing. More like Pnter...no Abbot brothers, no A's. lol...so stupid.
Anyway, I love Metallica, still, and always have a great fucking time at their shows, so I will go every chance I get. Last time I saw them was with Volbeat and Avenged Sevenfold...so can't get much worse than that! lolol
Before that was with Gojira and Lamb of God. No complaints there haha. Wish they'd tour with cooler bands lol.

I love me some metallica but I really don’t care for metal shows at stadiums anymore so I have not seen them since the 90’s. I’ll probably pass on this as well.
Besides that the prices are getting more and more insane!

I'll admit that I've never seen Metallica or Pantera (or Zakk) live, so I guess this is something I should be doing because I have yet to do so. Plus, my son is the main reason since he's huge into those bands and he'll love the experience. Worth it for me. If it was just me I wouldn't even bother.

I disagree on the Pantera thing. I never saw them, and I just cannot get excited about seeing them with Zak. Zero interest in this iteration.

Re: Metallica/Pantera/MVH tour - anyone going?
I actually like Greta Van Fleet but I agree they're not the band to open for Metallica lol
I also don't have a lot of interest with seeing Pantera without Dime and Vinnie. Don't get me wrong, Zakk Wylde is one of my favorite guitar players (possibly THE favorite based on his early stuff) but idk it doesn't sound right in this context. It sounds like BLS playing Pantera songs with Phil. Which is awesome in its own right. Or maybe Down with Zakk. Awesome too.
But it's not Pantera. It doesn't sound like Pantera. Dime and Zakk are very similar in a sense that the have very distinctive sonic imprints. Everything they touch is going to sound like them. But their styles are very different from each other. If Dime stepped for BLS the same thing would've happened, only in reverse.

Re: Metallica/Pantera/MVH tour - anyone going?
I saw Pantera with Dime and Vinnie four times. Once opening for Skid Row on the VDOP tour, once with Type O Negative opening on the FBD tour, and two other times co-headlining, once with Anthrax and once with White Zombie, who was touring on Astro Creep. All of those were incredible shows, and going now would just be a shadow of what I’ve already experienced. That said, I think Zakk and Charlie are coming from the right place to pay tribute. For Phil and Rex, it’s gotta just be a fucking insanely lucrative cash grab.
I mean, I’m old now, but I’ve seen that at its best. There is a whole generation of fans who will only see that shit on grainy YouTube videos, and they just want to see those songs performed live. I get it, I just don’t think it should be called Pantera.

It honestly sounds fine for what it is. Guitars sound just like you’d expect them to, Zakk playing Dime’s parts. Charlie does a goddamn phenomenal job playing Vinnie’s parts. Phil sounds better than you’d expect him to, but he’s still a shadow of what he used to be.

That’s far and away my biggest gripe about it. All the footage of them has the giant PanterA logo behind them, with the CFH stuff on the sides of the stage. Stop it.
I mean I get it. Advertise as Pantera, make more money, blahblahblah. Fuck off. No.
Musically, it’s fine. It’s fucking not Pantera, so stop advertising it like it is. It is a more than competent band with two original members of Pantera playing those songs. I mean, this isn’t like Metallica replacing Ron McGovern and still calling themselves Metallica, no offense to Ron McGovern.
Re: Metallica/Pantera/MVH tour - anyone going?
if they just started this as a new band it could have been real cool, they could have done the same tours and festivals they are now and we could have had new music along with a pretty cool pantera tribute. i cant believe they are just gonna do one big tour then call it a day, you know the new album is coming
Re: Metallica/Pantera/MVH tour - anyone going?
Metallica, a Pantera tribute band, and Eddie’s son’s band, which is the most interesting band on the bill, do not justify the exorbitant price for a ticket. Hell, I’m pissed off at paying what I’m going to pay for Ween tickets.

Tickets are insane these days. That said, I’d pay just about whatever they asked to experience that Pantera/White Zombie show again. That show was absolutely nuts. It took WZ’s crew like an hour and fifteen minutes just to set up their stage and all the theatrics that they used.
Of course, at the time, nobody knew that Rob and the rest of the band couldn’t stand each other.
Another one was that VDOP tour. Those were the days of the record store meet and greet. Met Pantera, shook Dime’s hand, vividly remember he had a grip like a damn vise. Got their autographs on a vinyl sized print of the VDOP cover artwork, and back then he still signed things Diamond Darrell. I’ll have to find that thing, I have no idea where it is. Still have the shirt from that show.

Somehow when I was a teenager I missed any time Pantera came. And I kick myself for that becaue that’s something I should have seen. I’m excited to hear these songs live. And funnily enough, out of the bands you mentioned above I saw White Zombie touring with the Ramones for Astrocreep 2000 (they coheadlined and Zombie went on last) and saw Type O a couple times (World Coming Down tour and Dead Again tour). I, like you, am definitely old enough to know that it’s a tribute and should be billed as such. And I’ve seen some of the tracks done by Phil’s Illegals band. I always thought Marzi Montazeri should’ve been the guy to do the tribute tour. I have no issue with Zack but I saw Marzi do a few Pantera tunes in the Illegals and he was great. But yeah, it’s a tribute and should be billed as such. Still, I want to see this set live. It’s the closest I’m going to get.

Yep, and it’s for that reason that I’m totally cool with the tour existing. I mean, Pantera is my all time favorite band, and Dime’s playing changed my life trajectory in a lot of ways. It’s for people in your type of situation that never got to see them, or are huge fans and are simply too young to have ever had the chance.
As I mentioned above, I do think Zakk and Charlie are coming from a place of honoring the brothers. I do. But the marketing of it, with the old school logo, just leaves a sour taste to me. That part I really don’t like.

Ticket prices are not a big deterrent for me. They're not cheap but nothing that is completely unaffordable either. It's usually the price of dining out 2-3 times as long as you're not getting first row/first section tickets. So not the end of the world.
Ultimately I decide whether I want to go based on the artist and the distance I need to travel.
