Most peoples tone now a days is one I don't care for. Its like they just down tune their guitars, and dime the bass on their amps.
Just take a look at this video. He cranks the tone knob on the TS to max almost by instinct. And you wonder why the high end of his tone is thin and brittle with honky mids.

I think the 5150/6505 is responsible for the shit modern metal tone I hear everywhere these days. Everyone that owns one has the same sound. Boring, lifeless, Oversaturated, buzzy shit, with too much treble.
And now all the modern high gain amps are emulating that sound... Randall is guilty. i hate their new line of tube amps, they suck. All the kids like to sound like everyone else.

I like a ton of saturation, and even a little fizz from time to time, but I find the typical 5150 tone to be muddy and constipated. It cuts because it's fucking loud, not because it has an ideal voicing.
The Diavlo series doesn't really have that sound (it was around before Fortin was hired), but I find that their Thrasher/Satan is going for an ENGL/5150 crossbreed tone.

Anyone gotten any new gear? I'm still waiting for the Randall red pedal to come out. And i'm still thinking about getting an LP type guitar. We'll see.

I got some NOS Bill Lawrence pickups and this dirt cheap Charvel to try them out in. Installing them tomorrow.

So how do you like the BL pickups?

They're okay. I think I like the neck pickup more. I'm going swap around some different value pots for the bridge and see how that does.

I'm still thinking about trying the Dimarzio Titan.

I'm tired of using digital crap and I can't crank amps to house shaking levels so the next logical thing seems to be going SS. I'm trying to decide between a tightmetal pro to run thru my 6505 112 combo (which I should probably just sell, because it sucks) or one of the Randall RG heads and a 2x12 or 4x12. I know solid state is known to sound good at low volumes but I haven't had an SS amp in several years.

Just get the RRED pedal when it's released.

I couldn't get modeling stuff to work for me. Too much tweaking. I've been looking at the tightmetal pro, the empress heavy, and the Randall RGod. Also the Egnater black metal, and Rivera shaman are worth looking at. If you want a new amp, look at the RG heads, the Peavey XL/XXL heads, and the AMT stonehead.

Forgot about the RRED pedal. The tightmetal pro intrigues me because it has so many features. I've heard good things about AMT as well. I really wish there was somewhere local that had all this stuff to try out.

Yea, my GC and Sam ash hasn't been carrying crap lately. I've had to hit youtube for demos.

One of the things I don't like about most youtube demos is that they're usually only recorded either direct or with a mic'd up cab. I much prefer the "amp in the room" sound and most videos don't have that.
I think that's why I could never get along with modeling and FRFR setups.

I'm thinking if the Randall red isn't great, I'm going to get the RGOD. I think they rock.

The RRED is exactly the same as the red channel on the RG100 heads and RGOD pedal. It just lacks the blue channel, which is their new super high gain channel.
