Jer's Home Studio Updates Thread: No one cares! LOL!

Post by JerEvil »

Finally saying “fuck it” and grabbing a chassis, 2 mic pre’s and a reamper.

Here’s what I’m looking at:
• Neve R6 chassis
• Tonelux MP5A
• Neve 511
• Radial X Amp 500

I got a bunch of mic’s a while back and have been wanting to get some mic pre’s for a minute. Not only for my mic’s but I’ve heard a few guys running each side of their Torpedo Studio’s with a pre on each side and it definitely adds a bit more “something”

Looked at some of the Warm Audio and GAP stuff but I think that might just be fucking about when I could spend another couple of bucks and get something like the Neve.

The Tonelux has what’s supposed to be a nice DI built in as well.

EDIT:
Finally got these guys unpacked and loaded into the chassis. Man, really nice difference running the pair with the Torpedo. Will hook up some mics for some vocal tracks tonight.

Image
Image

The Tilt EQ is REALLY nice for quick top end/bottom end adjustments

EDIT:
Here's an unboxing of the pre's

EDIT:
Comp and EQ have landed!

Image

Just got the EQ today:
Image

And here's everything in so far...
Image

The pre's make a really nice difference, especially on the Torpedo. I keep them "always on" with it. The "Tilt EQ" on the pre's makes a nice touch for tracking and just adding a little girth or air depending. When I am doing bass or vocals, I remove the second one from the Torpedo and then run Pre > Comp > EQ as a chain.

Tried the Pre/Comp the other day when the comp got here as a bass chain and it was awesome! Going to keep this rack all guitar, bass and vocal tracking stuff. Will do another for mix bus and various "other" needs. Looking at some full size hardware as well.

Love saying, "Fuck it"!!!! :rawk: :rawk: :rawk: :rawk:
Congrats!!!

That Neve R6 has good price for a 500 Series Chassis and you've certainly done your homework - nice preamps!
Been meaning to pickup the Radial X amp so I can stick pedals into a track.
I really like to use my lunchbox to process some sound before it goes digital.

If I ever upgrade my 3 space, Lindel chassis, I'd get a chassis with a built in patchbay, like this one:
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... lsrc=aw.ds
Patchbays make it easy to rearrange the 500 series units without having to go around back and rewire. So, I bought a $90 Behringer patch bay and plugged both my 2 spaces of regular rack gear and the in's and out's of each 500 Series unit into the patch bay.

I don't care what anyone says, LUNCH BOXES ARE COOL!!!!!

It will sum groups of modules within the chassis, into Multi 1 and Multi 2. You can also patch in other effects (that are not in the chassis).

It's not a big deal because, you can wire up a regular patchbay to do that too. Some patchbays have dip switches so you don't have to do and soldering.

Ha! Yeah man and don’t forget 6 mic’s about 3 months ago...

Here’s what’s coming in

Image

I opted for the Neve 10 space chassis as I know I’ll be up to 7 spaces used soon enough. I am going to shoot out the Xamp reamper vs a passive one my buddy built. I am hoping the Xamp is a keeper because it’s tidier in the chassis.

I see Midas has a really low priced 500 series rack, I would assume the Neve would be built like a tank and sound great all the same though..... 500 series stuff really is cool once you have the I/O for it in your recording rig.

Made a clutch decision and went with a pair of the Tonelux.

My sales guy at Vintage King had mentioned the idea of pairs for dual mic’ing and that sometimes stacking pres doesn’t always yield the best results. Reached out to a few producer buds and guys really into this shit and said he was offering solid advice.

Everyone (sales guy included) said go Tonelux in my situation because for one they have really good DI’s (I have no actually DI separately) and they’re fantastic for the price.

I’ll add more in the not too distant futue. Definitely the Neve 511’s, probably then Avedis MA5’s and at least one real 1073. Also want the Wesaudio Dione for a mix bud comp.

Make sure the Lunchbox you get has lots of power to supply enough for whatever you may need. I have a full API 6 space and it is nice to have.

Thanks man! I need an EQ so I’ll have to check that out for sure. Looking at a lot of stuff and it’s a bit overwhelming! Between this and the Synergy modules... I can see a bit of a problem forming...

Yeah good advice for sure and that’s something I definitely looked for when shopping. This Neve chassis should be more than enough power-wise.

Pics of your setup?

Ha! Not filled yet! Soon enough though. My guy at Vintage King was able to sort me with blanks. Hopefully my mic pre’s will be here this week.

That's killer man. I've been wanting to get into the 500 series game myself. It makes it much easier to manage components in a small studio then the regular 19" racks.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Amps:
Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Cabs
Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

Oh man totally. You can really get some solid gear for not TOO much dough as well. I know w a lot of these 500 series guys can be a bit "cork sniffer", hell probably more than amp guys! LOL!

But there's some solid shit for sub $500 out there... now of course, I seem to have those filters turned off because everything I want to add is like $1k and up! LOL!

CONGRATS!!!!! WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!

You'll want a compressor for each preamp. FMR Audio makes a good one called, the "Really Nice Compressor" for only $299.
https://www.altomusic.com/fmr-audio-rnc ... index=1611

They don't make them anymore but, if you can find one, the Aphex Aural Exciter with Big Bottom is good to have in your chassis.
