Updating Windows 7 pro to 10

Post by overdrivenel34s »

I have 32 bit win 7 pro on my desktop computer that i use for recording. Computer seems to work fine. Anyone else recently upgrade win 7 to win 10? If so, how did the upgrade go? How's computer running including for audio recording and playback since the upgrade?

Looks like on Microsoft's website its now $200 for Win 10 pro.

this seems relevant

edit: fyi when I did the upgrade it got stuck because I had an antivirus program running.
I booted into safe mode, turned that off and then the upgrade completed sucessfully.

Timely thread; i got a call to go do this upgrade for an old coworker today.

Will report back later with results; i’ve never done a straight upgrade from 7 to 10 before

Then why upgrade? :idk: Unless you use it for other things I guess.

Have you checked to see if your hardware and software will work on win10? Just want to make sure before you commit.

I came to post the link, but got beat to the punch.

I updated a Win 7 machine this week. Backed up all the files, and didn't need to, everything went smooooooooth.

I'm going to update another win 7 machine tomorrow, doing backups tonight, hopefully it will go great.

About a year ago I tried to update a win 8.1 machine, failed......I'm going to try again soon......
After Tuesday, even the calendar goes WTF!

I had a computer that I had to revert back to Windows 7 because it couldn't support windows 10, so keep in mind that depending on how old your machine is it might not be a straight forward upgrade.

Forgot to post back - the upgrade i did Saturday went off without a hitch. Took a couple hours because the chick lives in BFE with ultra slow interwebs, so all the update checks took forever.

Apparently it validated her windows 7 key because it never prompted me for one at any point and it's showing that windows 10 is activated.

Windows 10 is working as a fine OS for me right now.

I would just go for it.

Microsoft announces major security vulnerability and update on the last day they are supporting Windoes 7. Hmmm. Can I upgrade to Windows 8.0? Microsoft told me that it's better. I saw the tv commercial.

doh.

well. the upgrade to windows went fine, but all my audio drivers went sideways.

guess it's a good time to upgrade reaper anyhow, and revisit ALL of my focusrite drivers :( thoughts and prayers that all my plugs aren't jammed up.

this could be a bit o' a mess, but hope not!

Thanks! I completed the upgrade last night. It did take quite a while to fully complete but all went well. Computer has been working good since upgrade. :beavis:

Are you not getting any sound to play, unable to get sound to record from interface, or was it issues like noise or choppy playback or other issues? For no sound, if havent already validated, check sound control panel to make sure windows didn't switch default devise to built in soundcard for playback tab and recording tab didnt default to comp mic input instead of the interface.

I have a focusrite interface and didn't have to upgrade any drivers or software after upgrade.

After i updated to Windows 10, i did run disk defragmenter. I think it was only 2% fragmented when i checked it post upgrade. Probably wasn't needed and would run anyway within next week but what the hell.

yeah, win 10 recognizes my saffire pro40's, but won't play anything through them. mix control won't engage and says 'no hardware connected', and somehow, windows sees it most of the time... but it's ALL erratic. sometimes mix control works, sometimes windows WON'T see it. no idea wtf is goin on. argh.

anybody know where to get a working version of the 1394 OHCI legacy driver? i can get a hold of the installer from microsoft, but it won't work, and my interfaces are sitting here doing nothing even though windows recognizes them... :/

I came in to warn you about this very thing. My Saffire 56 has been real touchy since the upgrade to win10. I had to put the driver in legacy mode and it seems to work consistently now.

I run a pro 40 on win10 with no problems although I use an aftermarket firewire card as my mobo doesn't have one :idk:

(EDITED)

yeah, i think i worked it out. i went to the the legacy driver and reset defaults on Mix Control. seems to've gotten er square. it was seriously weird and intermittent for a while- but also think the updates that kept coming in were jacking it up too.

the issue still remaining is that the machine doesn't pick up on restart. i have to start the pro40 AFTER i boot the computer- and then it picks up. sometimes i manually have to reset frequency... it's still a bit of a mess, and it's still erratic. it DOES work. but it ain't working super fluidly yet as my main sound device.

currently reset it to have no realtek stuff enabled, even as backup, and disabled a buncha stuff as per the focusrite website that didn't exist in win7. gahh... what a PITA.
