Can anyone help me with mixing and mastering my bands EP?

Post by Grimorian »

Looking to get a professional mix and master done and was wondering if anyone knows any good places to get it done that won't cost an arm and a leg, or perhaps someone here is pretty good at it and wouldn't mind giving it a shot?

IMHO, mixing/mastering is either free (DIY) or expensive (top pro).

Paying a cheap studio to do it for you won't get much better results than you would by DIY.

Paying a studio that will REALLY take it to the next level will cost you.

But YMMV. Buyer's beware.
Guitars:
'78 Les Paul Pro / '89 SG Special/ '04 Gibson Les Paul Classic 3 pickup / Jackson Star/ Endres Tele / Fernandes Rhoads/ ''74 Hohner MIJ strat/ 2 Partscasters

Depends on when you ask. I got tired of constantly updating this section lol

Marshall 1960A w V30s/ Seismic 2x12 w Redback and V30.

I agree with what Billy said. Its a great skill to have, so Id just play with it yourself. Look around for some good mastering VSTs...I use CLassic Limiter and Focusrite EQ on my stuff...

For mixing,...well, if you don't want to pay to get it done I'd just do some studying online and DIY it. But I will say if you get someone that knows what the fuck they're doing the results can be night and day. That's assuming your source is good.

For mastering, check this place out:

http://alienbeansstudio.com/

Ty Tabor of King's X owns the studio and their prices are very, very good. You can get 10 songs down for around $300. Some places charge about that per song. A buddy of mine had his stuff mastered there and it turned out really nice.

Sounds fun. Send me stems for 1 song, and I'll give you a demo, you can see what you think.

I'm heading back to my friends studio tomorrow to fix up a few vocal parts and grab the pro tools files from him. So I'll be able to get stems and anything else for the songs by this weekend and send stuff out to anyone in the mood to fool around with them.

I'm pretty decent and not working on a project currently. What are you looking to spend?

Quick question, when exporting for stems how do I get all the plug in effects to bounce with the tracks? Or are they supposed to be raw? I've never bounced out for stems...

Ok, well so far, here are some mixes of my bands EP in case anyone wants to try and master a song or something... Had to break it up into 2 files cause it was too large for the free upload. Stem files are in the works. I'm definitely down to work out some kinda monetary compensation to anyone wanting to master the whole thing, provided you got something to show first so I know I'm not throwing money away.

Well I got some mixes done myself, which I don't think are too bad considering I don't have proper monitors anymore and had to use headphones mostly...

I also have the straight raw files of everything now that I got consolidated/exported by my friend... I can upload or send those if anyone is interested. I also forgot to mention that these are the songs I recorded direct with a AMT-P1 pedal and a AMT-CN1 Chameleon Cab (cabinet simulator pedal) straight into the board that I mentioned a while ago on a HC thread for anyone that remembers.

I'd bring the bass up a bit. At the moment there's a bit of a gap between the guitars and the low end of the kick. So the there's low end in the mix from the kick, but the guitars are sounding a bit weak IMO coz they don't have the bass backing them up. Fill the gap in the mix a bit more and you're off to a decent start.

I'd probably work on bringing out (though not necessarily just cranking 'em up a bit) the overheads a bit more, and unsquashing the snare a bit (or blending a bit of a more dry sound back in for a bit more snap, rather than just a squashed thud). And the low end boom at around 1:55 is a tad silly. :|

More 60hz in the bass guitar, the guitars sound like they could use less gain. and as said, uncompress the drums a bit.

That said, the vocals are pretty brutal.

I'll pm you my email and have a mix if you're cool with that?

Ok, your main problem is the guitars - they're scratchy and horrible. Seriously, sounds like the DI out from an amp, without a cab sim.
Try putting a highpass on them at about 9-11khz, and maybe a slight notch about 2k.

Vocals are great, drums are too compressed but the raw sound of them is crisp and tight, nice work.

If you want to upload the stems, I'd be happy to mix one track for free on a portfolio basis, since I've not worked with many metal bands.

I gotta find somewhere to upload the stems... They're too big for my free mediafire thing. Any suggestions?

If you have trouble with Mediafire, try Google Drive or Dropbox.

I'll check out those stems, before you know it you're going to be inundated with mixes.

The more mixes the better... It's also a situation for somebody to make a few extra bucks if the mixes are good and they want to do the whole thing. So, win win I guess... LoL.

And don't forget a twist of lemon!

I don't know how I still get high- and low- pass confused. I'd love to hear what a guitar highpassed at 11k sounds like....probably a cat scratching a door.

Nice mix, gt_jumper. Plenty of haunting mids, love the big drum sound.

EDIT: Here's my mix anyway. I don't generally work on metal but it's always entertaining.
