Really though...I have incredible guitars and not a single amp. I know exactly what I want in an amp, yet know close to nothing about them. I'm here for an education and information.

Loves: Mick Taylor, SRV, Jimi, Mato Nanji....I want that tone!!!!

Guitars: 1957 Strat...the real f'n deal with mojo for miles AND a 1960 burst that is 100% original...sustain for weeks.

Seeking: An amp that has a wide range of tone, and can be played in an apartment building without being tossed out.

Hmmmm a 57 Strat and a real 60 LP? That is quite the Arsenal. I might suggest a real Tweed Deluxe late 50s, or a real Marshall 18 Watt combo. Maybe a Deluxe Reverb blackface. Those are some of the best small combos ever, and would match 3-400,000 worth of guitars.

Yeah. Some kind of pedal platform type amp with a good master volume. Maybe a hot rod deluxe or...hell. Get a kemper or something you can plug head phones in to.

50's Fender Tweed and Fender Deluxe...would I be able to get them to break up at reasonable volumes? Most of those are not around to play and would probably have to buy through reverb. A Marshall 18w combo would probably be too much volume.

I'm guessing I could always go low volume and use pedals to overdrive, but I'm sure there's a big trade off to doing something like that on the Marshall.

I don't mind spending the big bucks for an old 50's Fender Amp...unless there's a contemporary version of it that will be less headaches and have more features.

Ajax, I am going to check out that Katana today at GC. I'm not going to turn up my nose at a $200 amp if it sounds great, tubes or no tubes.

I'm kind of shocked that no one has put out a Dumble ODS clone...never heard a Dumble live, so for all I know it's hyped folklore.

There are plenty of clones, dumble in a box, profiles, etc. It's a rabbit hole that has never interested me but they do exist.

Sim Pedals (there are a lot more but, I'm familiar with these):
MXR, Shin Juku - I use this on my Solid State Randall. It gives me a nice, squishy tube feel.

I agree. Original Tweed Deluxes break up pretty early. Both the Strat and LP wound sound magical.

That said if you're into the Dumble style tone Fuchs ODS-50 has a fantastic master volume.

There's a '59 Fender Tweed on reverb that looks pretty awesome. I like Fuchs style, sound and reputation, but they discontinued a 7w head...I'm going to look into that on reverb as well. Two Rock amps seem to be everywhere on the used market and makes me think, "do people hate them after a few weeks"?

Two Rocks are good sounding heads but some of them, like the Studio Pro 35 have a very quick attack and feel "stiff" to me. I like a little bit of sag in the feel which Tweeds are perfect for. If you want reverb, and a little stiffer attack with higher headroom, I would look at the Blackface Deluxes or something similar.

Doesn't necessarily have to be vintage. Lots of people make good clones. MortaTone here makes a good one. Victoria, Clark and Grammatico are also well known maker of Fender Tweed style amps.

But if it was me, and I had the money to burn and I also owned a '57 Strat and a fucking '60 Les Paul, I would be looking at holy grail vintage amps to complete the collection and have the tone of the Gods.

That said, you should also look at Morgan amplifiers. They make awesome no frills tube amps. Some based on Vox AC30, others based on Fenders. They just released a new Tweed Deluxe style amp that looks killer!

Just wondering, how is it that you have two of the most iconic guitars in the history of electric guitar but you don't have a single amp?
That would be like owning a '52 Corvette and a '55 T-bird and having to ask where you can buy tires for them.

I had a Mesa Lone Star Special for about 10 years and someone made me a great offer on it (custom Koa, cool amp). I thought, I'll just go buy a different amp, but I never replaced it and it's been a few years now and I've been playing my Santa Cruz OM Grande. Kinda like the Neil Young thing where he goes acoustic for a long while and then he gets the itch to blast a LP Custom until he loses his hearing.

I did like the Mesa LSS and the ability to switch down to 5w. I was at guitar center today looking at Fenders, Blackstar, Vox and the sales guy was just raving on about the Katana. Didn't have time to plug in but I will soon and try them all.

If I could figure this site out, I'd post a few pics of my guitars (Yes, I'm lame in Amp speak and Web speak).
